I've never built a custom centerfire rifle and I'd like a semi long range 223 on a 700 action. 1-7/1-8 twist to push 75gr Amax.
So back to my original question. Who do you fellas recomend without taking a second mortgage? It would be even better if there was someone in the middle/south Ga. I'd really like to see some hands on to get an idea of the process.

APA is a first class shop. Very friendly staff, and worth the drive there just to see the operation. They did some first class work for me!

I had the special liberty to spending a day with an expert. Chad Dixion of LongRifles, Inc. replaced my Remingtion 700 Police barrel. The only reason I replaced the barrel was because I wanted a 1/10 twist instead of the factory 1/12 twist, but I was able to get about 1700 rounds through the barrel before removing it. First let me say, Chad is a "Professional" by all means. He isn't that typical ego Gunsmith who takes your money and asks you leave and you'll get it when I'm done. These photos don't do the workmanship justice by all means. He really takes his time measuring twice making sure every cut is where he wants it. If you have an old rifle and want it upgraded. This is your man.

I'm not really one to promote/advertise for anyone, but he truly made this a worth wild cost effective upgrade.

The barrel is a Lilja 30 caliber finished around 26 inches. 1/10 twist rate. Chambered in 308 Winchester.

Here is the muzzle after taking out one winter day.

Well I was able to shoot if for the first time. It was about 30 degrees out, winds calm. Maybe a 1mph left to right. I only had time for 25 rds. Breaking in barrels eat up time. Took 5 rounds at 50 yards to get on the paper. Once dialed in took it to 100 yards. I fired 5 rounds and swabbed the barrel in three sets. Fired two for a final scope zero. Then shot my three round group and managed .335 MOA group. You guys need to see the paper? I'm just being lazy to take them but I did get pictures of the muzzle. lol

The best I could do with the old barrel at 300yards was anywhere from 3.5-4.5inches. The day I took it out and started testing loads at 300 yards was pretty interesting. The first set i managed 2.5inch group. By the end of the day i was making 1.75-2.6 inch groups at 300yards

Oh and a little free advertising!

Again, back to the topic. Gunsmiths in Georgia. My number one pick is APA in Jefferson, GA. Not far up I85 from Atlanta and they are a great bunch of guys to work with. I have several of their builds and all are first class in style, function and accuracy.
