700 Rem action and AICS mag question.

I sold my previous stock with a Seekins Precision BM set up for a 700 SA.

I replaced it with a Manners T4A with a Mini Chassis.

Well the Mini Chassis uses the AICS mags, different from the Seekins.

The action bolts into place perfectly.......but the problem is my mag won't seat. Does the bottom of the 700 action need to be modified to use the AICS mags?

Are you sure you have the correct AI mags? If yes then call Manners and ask about this problem. If no sell your old mags and buy new mags. Don't alter your receiver trying to make it work with the AI mags you have. This would render your action useless if you need to sell it.

At the rear of the receiver magazine box recess there's a small notch that sticks out slightly, it has a threaded hole in it. With the magazine removed look into the magazine well at the rear of it where it contacts the receiver. Is any part of that notch protruding into the magazine well that could possibly be hitting the magazine? If so, that could be the culprit. Some DBM's require that to be machined off or reduced in length.

Thank you, when I pull the bolt back, the spent case ejects and when I push the bolt forward it travels on top of the next round without chambering it.

I've used Remington,Lapua, Winchester, PMC ammo brand makes no difference. If anyone has a solution my email is [email protected].

Sounds like your magazine is too low in the DBM, different from my other answer. Try opening up your feed lips ever so slightly to let more of the case head be presented to the bolt nose.

I was looking at it a little closer. It appears the the front lip is hitting the part of the action sticking out in the front part of the magwell. It looks like the Mage lip is meant to but up perfectly to the bottom of the action but for some reason it won't seat deep enough.

You can see the tiny scratch in the finish of the action where the feed lip of the mag hits it.

It'll hit slightly in the front and wear the finish off, looks normal in the picture. Take the receiver out of the stock and check the magazine fit for lock up. Re-install the receiver in the stock with magazine still locked up but don’t tighten the screws. Check the magazine fit/lock up again and look close to see if you can tell where the interference is at, front or rear in the receiver magazine well cut out.

Sometimes, the latch itself can be shortened to allow lock up but, only as a last resort. You want the magazine to lock up solid and 100% but, still have a tiny amount of wiggle, in and out or up and down. Not tight against the receiver.

I did just what you said. I locked the mag into place and started to torque the action down. Eventually the mag pushed up against the receiver. If I kept tightening, it would press hard enough that the mag would get stuck. The mag seems to be seating too far up into the chassis.....not by much, fractions of an inch but enough to not allow the mag to lock into place.

Thanks William, you had it right.

Here's how far off the catch was.

Apparently the mag catch was a bit too long. I was thinking it had something to do with how far the mag was seating into the chassis. William explained that if the mag is seated against the bottom of the action, it's right where it needs to be.

It was the mag catch that was too long and the end needed to be filed down a little at a time until the catch would just engage the mag hold on the magazine to keep it in place.

Worked perfectly.....sometimes you just need a new perspective from someone with experience dealing with this stuff.

Oh, here's a pic of the mag seated and a round in place. Seems like enough round is up into the chamber and just over the bolt lip.
