I have an sps tactical in .223 that I was looking to trade for the same gun in .308, but someone on another forum has offered an sps varmint in 308.

Is the stock on the sps tactical better than the sps varmint stock?

Could I drop the barreled action from the sps varmint into my sps tactical stock if we swapped barreled actions?

Thanks.

Re: 700 sps tactical / sps varmint stock questions

yes you could interchange the stocks. Neither one is that great. If I had to choose I would probably take the varmint stock and then bed the crap out of it to make sure it didn't touch the barrel under recoil.

Yes you could swap stocks, no issues there, but no, it is not a better stock. At least if it is the factory stock. They both have lots of flex in the forend which allow for barrel contact. Both rifles you mention are best served with a good aftermarket stock. Check out Bell & Carlson for good value.

Re: 700 sps tactical / sps varmint stock questions

Just bought an sps in 308 tactical. The stock is fine for a inthe the woods deer gun..not for anything precision where bags/pod are used. It flexes like a pr-accu stock savage. I dropped it in a b/c right out of the box.

Re: 700 sps tactical / sps varmint stock questions

Thanks for all of the replies.

While researching I realized that I wanted/needed the sps tactical aac in 308 for the 1:10 twist barrel. I have a 7.62 SS phantom on the way and wanted the faster twist for suppressed shooting. Up until then I was going to get the regular tactical 308 and have my smith thread it, not realizing it was 1:12.

That being said I sold the 223 tactical outright and am going to purchase the tactical aac. The stock was good enough on my .223 and I'll live with it for a while on the .308 for whitetail hunting.

Check out the Rem 700 5R they come with the 1/10 twist in .308 Also there are a couple of do it your self. Bedding of the SPS stock out there. In the gunsmith section. I would keep the hoge. Piller beded over the stock SPS plastic non piller beded stock. And as the above poster have sujested bed it and trim it. Good luck and good hunting.

This/\

The SPS varmint stocks are made TO touch the barrel to keep the stock from warping. It has two .5-.75" long barrel pads in the 4 and 8 o-clock positions. If you cut them out you may need to cut a lot more out and not just the pads. Each stock is an individual in how it will react and they have the quality of cooking ware.

Re: 700 sps tactical / sps varmint stock questions

I would change the stock no matter which one I bought.

I have one of the SPS Varmints and it shoots fine for me off a bag. On Wednesday the stock goes in the trash and the barreled action goes into an AI AX until my new barrel is delivered in a few months. After that it will go into something decent that I can find here on the Hide.
