Hi all,

I was forwarded to this site, by a friend, about a week ago. I've spent 30 some hours on here reading since. Wow, what an informative site.

I am looking for my first LR rifle. I am interested in 1000 yards for now. I am leaning towards the Rem 700 XCR tactical, through the reading I have done here. Seems like a good pricepoint for a new gun, and it should do the trick for what I need currently.

What do you guys think that own this gun, in this caliber? Or those who have shot it?

I was thinking of topping it with a Huskemaw Scope. I haven't researched the Nightforce, but think they may be out of my price range right now.

Can someone explain what a "decent bolt knob" would be, or means?

Any load suggestions for this weapon?

Also any other tips or hints?

Thanks all for a great site, and the help.

Les

Re: 700 XCR Tactical in 300 WM

First Welcome to the Hide. 300 WM is a good cartridge to go to 1K. However, it depends on your previous experience in long range shooting. If you already had extensive experience, then it's a good cartridge to go to polish your long range marksmanship. If not, then I would suggest the 308 caliber, since ammo is much cheaper to shoot and work on your marksmanship. Just a thought. In terms of the Remy XCR in either 308 or 300 WM is a good starting rifle. It's quite accurate out of the box so you don't have to do too much with it. Good luck.

I have a friend that has one, it shoots as well as my XCR LR in 308 which shoots really well. To this question you will be pointed to the 5R which is a ncie rifle, as is the XCR Tactical line. But if this is your first LR rifle you will also get pointed to the 308 caliber to start instead of the 300WM. I have both and get good results with both at 1k.

You should consider 308 due to ammo cost which will equate to more practice.

Re: 700 XCR Tactical in 300 WM

I've got an XCR in 300 WM. It is a good shooting gun, however, I would advise handloading if possible. The only factory ammo mine shot extremely well were the plain jane 150 grain Remington Core-Lokts. Great for hunting, but not exactly a good choice for 1,000 yd target shooting, if that is your goal.

To be honest, I wish I had gotten mine in a 308 instead of a 300. For what I use it for (hunting and target shooting <600 yards) it's more gun than I need. The 308 will be easier on the wallet and the shoulder.

Having said all of that, It is a fine weapon.

Re: 700 XCR Tactical in 300 WM

Thanks for the replies guys. I've done a fair amount of shooting out to 4-500 yards and have a rig to do that. I'm leaning towards the 300 win, as I already have a couple of them, and the reloading stuff for it. Also I would like a little more energy down range for elk, mulies, etc, when I get that far.

I'm going to start a seperate thread about scopes and other stuff, for this gun. But, as long as you are here..I was originally planning on putting a Huskemaw 5-20X on it. I like the idea of dialing a "range", figuring a dope and watching something drop. That said I did a bunch of searches and really couldn't find more than a couple of people here who supported that scope....but LOTS of haters. In all honesty right now I want to do a lot of long distance shooting, and eventually want to hunt at the long distances, some predator, some big game. I know this site is more of a long distance marksmens site, than a hunting site. I guess that is probably the biggest reason why the people here use the MOA, and MIL. I would like to figure yardage in yards, and drop in inches. Would MIL or MOA be better/easier?

Kind of got off track there, but I guess now I am leaning towards the Nightforce NXS 5.5-22x50. A better choice? Zero Stop or not? What does the Zero Stop do?

Thanks again all.

Nightforce scopes are GTG. Make sure you get the mil/mil in MLR reticle. The zero stop is a great feature. It helps to return to zero quickly when you loose track of your elevation. Would recommend it.

Re: 700 XCR Tactical in 300 WM

Found the 700 XCR Tactical yesterday for $925 out the door. It is in a .223

Listening to everyones thoughts, it would be nice to have a caliber with less recoil and cheaper ammo, so it could be shot more often. I am still getting the .300, but I'll have both to play with now.

Questions on the .223, can someone point me to what phrase to search for, on loads for this gun. I know I found some good feedback about the Berger VL's for the .300 WM.

When I search the Reloading section for .223, I got a lot of stuff, but didn't find much for load recipes. I would like to shoot this rife as far as possible, for the practice. Any expereince on good bullets, the weights, and any recipes? What would be the proper way to break this rifle in. Thanks all.

Re: 700 XCR Tactical in 300 WM

I just got an R700 XCR Tactical Long Range in 300WinMag about a month ago, and finally got to shoot it this weekend. I was using cheap walmart Federal 180gr Soft Points, and it was grouping 1" at 100yard with cheap stuff. The rifle really didnt have as much recoil as I expected, and it felt great shooting it. i need to get through a couple more boxes of my cheap walmart stuff (that came with the gun as part of the deal) to get some brass to start loading for it, but I have a wide range of bullets to try that i am looking forward to. The XCR might replace my R700 308 AAC as my new favorite Bolt Action Rifle.
