I have a m40a1 stock which is inletted for a m40 contoured barrel. Im thinking about putting a 700p contoured barrel on it. If I do will it look like shit? Does anyone know how much space i'll have around the barrel on the stock? will it be so much that its swimming in my stock? Just want some opinions before I have that barrel ordered. Thanks for your input

cheers

Can't say how much room that'll leave, I suspect it'll be substantial, and therefore a bit odd looking. However you could fill the channel with whatever bedding material you prefer and with a new paint job no one would ever know. Just some food for thought.

I have about 1/8 of an inch of clearance all the way down my barrel. It looked odd at first but it keeps my barrel noticably cooler and now that I've gotten used to it, I think it looks good. Function over form

I've got a stock for my 700 PSS that has a huge gap around it, maybe an 1/8th as mentioned. It does look a bit odd but really isn't too bad.

you get the benefit of uniform cooling and you don't have to worry about stock flexing into the bbl.

Ryan, is the stock cut for the M40 or M40a1, the M40 is 830 at the muzzle and basically the same as the standard Rem varmint contour, the older pss rifles had the same contour and barrel lenght as the M40 and the Rem varmint rifles. The newer pss rifles have the 26 inch barrel but I was under the impression it was the same barrel contour .

I really think if it's an M40A1 stock it's cut for the M40A1 barrel contour. To my knowledge there were no M40's that were fitted to A1 stocks. They would have been re-barreled as part of the M40A1 conversion. I think you just made a good catch on a typo. FWIW...

If you have the stock and you have the barreled action, then the simple answer is mount it up and see if it's acceptable to you. I have big honking gaps on two of my rifles. It really doesn't matter to me. It really matters to other folks.
