This is what I spent the last week and a half after work doing. I feel like a man/badass right now for accomplishing this. It was a cool project, and the stock now fits my build/needs better. It wasnt too difficult, as you can tell I live in a damn dormitory, so using hand tools (sans the vertical sander) was all I was limited too. A little creativity, alot of free time, and not having nosey neighbors makes it easy. I used wooden dowel segments attached into small pilot holes in the stock, and used them as a sort of pillar to hold the putty/filler combo stationary. It came together well, and despite what some might think, the "faux stone" texture actually feels really nice under the krylon.
Credit to Capt Kirk for his walkthrough on the 10/22 series, which i basically pilfered (not nearly as well), but still used as a guide

I like the dowel idea as an armature for the filler material.
I have some reservations about strength and thinning the grip area as much as appears to be the case. I would make more allowance for that.
One suggestion might be to bore a hole back and down from the action inlet; following the stock centerline, and configuring my grip cutout to allow for at least some wood around the hole, I would then epoxy some steel rod or tube into the borehole.
Another suggestion might be to do my cutting out, then wrapping the grip area with some fiberglass cloth before intalling the dowels and applying the filler material.
At any rate, these might be areas to consider if you were to repeat the exercise.

Very nice job badass. I just don't have the patience for this kind of tedious work. I guess it has something to wanting to see the results too quickly.

I needed to get a haircut, because I was starting to go out of regs. So it used my hair as a filler. It worked really well, considering Kirk uses cat hair for his.
Thanks for the compliments guys. Its turned out really well. Now The bolt handle will be going to Mark @ Sac, I ordered a Walther-Lothar barrel, and i got a set of XTR rings, and a wiegand mount inbound.
It'll be a beaut when it comes together

Good job. Really, really consider the advice given by Greg...you have a highly stressed area in that pistol grip. JMHO

nice job, but why do that to walnut?
i'm a fan of the stone paint for texture also, it actually looks pretty good without the krylon top coat too.

it actually holds up pretty well, just allow it to dry completely or it will "squish down" and defeat the purpose.
if the can is held back about 2.5 to 3 feet and you just spritz the stock, it seems to have a nice splatter effect that seems to give it even a better texture / grip. too much on gives it more of a stimpled effect.

I'm fairly confident in the job I did with the dowel pillars. I understand Greg's reservations, but the pistol grip dowels are all sunk ~3/8 into the wood, and superglued in place. come hell or high-water, I'm certain it will hold up.
Plus... Y'all have to remember that this is for a damn 22LR, so its not going to experiece near the stock pressure as a centerfire.

Give it some time. And report back I would like to know how well it holds up to rough use thinking of doing something like what u did looks good

I just did the same thing to my savage mark II. I used the same texture in a can as well... But I reinforced my factory stock with three layers of fiber glass sheets and fiberglass resin. It was a bitch to sand and it made me just appreciate the texture lol. I'll post some of my pics on another thread.
