7mm for ELR

Im not 100% sure but i am looking at building a 7mm as a ELR gun and i was looking at the 180 bergers they seem to be about the best 7 pill out there that i have found with a G1 of .674 but i am interested to see what others say on this subject.

I was advised these do not transition. Period. A 7mm thing the shooter thought.
I am not adverse to testing on my own but I feel it has been done, a lot. Would be nice to have some feedback here from 7 fans.

The 175 SMK is another good bullet. Has a Litz BC of .639 and should transition well (I haven't shot past 1K with it). I think the BC is understated, in my rifle they chrono at 3000 fps but the drops work out to 3200 fps.

Very good to know this build of mine is down the road but i am trying to get all my ducks in a row with components now, would have sucked to bough a couple hundred bullets that are not what i need!

162 Amax .625 and you can gas them.. The only problem they seem to be a seasonal run :(

Also the Berger .617 168 grain VLD is ok but you need altitude or air density alt of about 4k if you looking for a mile or so

Maybe a seasonal run, but more likely were suspended to get production of more popular bullets up to keep up with demand.

Hornady released a newsletter about it, but maybe that was dealer only info? Either way they are listed as suspended, along with 149 other bullets.

The Amax transitions well thru to subsonic flight?
I am sure they can be pushed hard, some here doing that with Magnums and Dakota, even larger cases. Question is not supersonic to a mile but beyond supersonic performance. What bullet will best perform thru to target without the benefit of maintaining 1200 / 1100 fps.

Thank you Diver. I will catch up.

eta;
I had a telephone conversation today with a representative from Berger. I asked about this very question. His reply was 30cal. Specifically, the 175 and 185 Juggernaught. Bet that is misspelled.-
I am no where near a level of understanding on this yet but it does seem like a pattern of referrals to not long for caliber and the 30's start to fit in.

Two valuable cents.
I hear ya. And that makes outstanding sense.
My brain is trying to decipher reports of varying degrees of success getting past a zone. A zone I will approach. I will not have more gas than my current equipment. Perhaps I am asking for too much. I can tell you that some posting here, those with knowledge and experience, which trumps all, have reported successes with the 30-06.
It can be done and I am a believer.
280, 30-06, my decision to be made.
One poster was showing his steel, one mile with 7-08. Now that is encouraging for sure. 162's no doubt. I do not recall the location [ad]. I shoot mostly at / near sea level-

I guess I must not have hit submit on my earlier post. I use 168 and 180 gr. Berger and JLK VLD type bullets out of a 26" 1-8" twisted 7mm-08. I get 2700 fps on just about everything. Seems like the barrel has a speed limit. I also use 175 and 180 SMK's long distance. They transition pretty well with that tight twist. The 168 SMK's only do well at higher altitudes. I've not shot them in extreme cold but down to 32 F. they transitioned at 4000' ASL but not 2000'. They also slowed down a lot more than the VLD's anywhere past 1000 yds. Same with the 175 and 180 SMK's but not as bad.

I was only dialing 7.4 mils to 1000 with Berger 182gr bullets in my SAUM, not pushing pressure limits at all. And use the G7 BC!

And the 162 Amax is temporarily discontinued unfortunately. No production until further notice.

2700 is good speed. My 7-08 has a slightly lower speed limit.
Adding a 280. Like to have the same usual suspects[ 162's and 168's] and include 180's.
