Hello,

If I were to rebarrel my rem 700 7mm mag to 300 win mag, would I have to change the bolt? or can I leave the whole action and bolt like it is and just rebarrel?

Re: 7mm rem mag to 300wm Help

To answer your original question, bolt face & action is same.

Opinion? Same as above: re-barrel with quality 7mm RM tube. There are some outstanding 7mm bullets available.

Thanks.

I plan on shooting the rifle at extreme range just for giggles

1000+ yards without breaking the bank, I was thinking a 300wm would give me some better loads to play with at long range, still not sure.

I just got my new stock today, an olive/back webbed B&C medalist, the rifle will most likely end up with a Lilja bull fluted barrel.

I agree with what everyone else has said, there are some really insane 7mm projectiles out there.

The Berger 180gr 7mm VLD has some good stats going for it!

Ive heard some talk from Bryan lits about Berger researcing some new .30 cal hybrids, however not sure what the current news is and how much better they will be over their existing VLD's.

That being said I believe when the day comes, a 210gr+ .30cal projectile pushed out of the right barrel will contend just as well as the 7mm... but that depends on IF the day comes that a projectile that big comes out

My next build will either be a 7mm Mag or a .338LM... gonna skip on the .300winmag

Re: 7mm rem mag to 300wm Help

Both of these rifles will shoot effectively at ranges you'll be challenged to find. The actual difference in performance at those ranges is far less different than if you moved up to a 300RUM, 338 EDGE, 338LM or bigger.

I've shot my 300WM out to 2300 yds with 208 Amax's with about 1 moa accuracy. The 7mm 180 VLD's at 2900 fps will go a little further SS, but I'm not sure how they perform transonic. Perhaps someone can chime in.

The bottom line is, all things being equal, build the one that will cost you less money. There is no compelling reason to switch from one to the other.

Re: 7mm rem mag to 300wm Help

now, it seems like this turned into a "which will net a tighter group at a mile" debate. I'm just like this guy. I have a rem700 donor that I'm building into a 300 Win Mag. Yes, there are quite a few great 7mm bullets. Mine, in current configuration (off the pawn shop shelf 250 cash ADL a la Walmart) is currently holding sub-3/4 inch MOA with Nosler Ballistic tips. It's going to be my deer gun for the year, and after that, it'll get a makeover into a 300 Win Mag tactical gun.

The defense for this transition lies in the 300wm's current standardization as a sniper cartridge, and the ability to find accurate store-bought ammo (not that I'm preparing to ever sink that low again... I'm hooked on uber-geeky calculations and tight tolerances). Plus, being military, if that commie zombie brigade every pops down on these green shores, I bet the military won't have much 7mm rem mag ammo on hand to use. Now, that last statement makes about 99 audacious assumptions, such as:
1. they'd actually give a sailor a gun
2. they'd actually give a sailor a gun on an army base.
3. they'd actually give a sailor a box of sniper ammo, much less a rifle, from an army base.
4. they'd actually let a sailor out of his cubicle long enough to catch a scent of cordite and zombie guts.
5. etc... etc... etc...

so, willing to forego the 7mm in exchange for the 300's popularity. When a single well-funded, tactical organization (other than the dozen or so secret service snipers) start using and distributing cast quantities of available, accurate ammo, I might switch back. Hey, the 7mm is a nice bullet.
