New Contest Starting Now! This Target Haunts Me
Tell us about the one that got away, the flier that ruined your group, the zero that drifted, the shot you still see when you close your eyes. Winner will receive a free scope!
ok im planning a bear hunt in Idaho when I get back from deployment and I would like to use my Remington 700 in 7mm Remington Mag, i love that round for the deer hunting but would that round be ok for bear or would I have to get a bigger caliber
I have used 7mm mag and 300 mag on Alaska game and in my experience, the 284 bullets fly better and drive deeper with their higher BC and SD using 175gr and 180gr Partitions, the only bullets I have used that never failed.
But, if you are in the market for a new pop gun then by all means drop the nuggets but I would go with 338 over 300.
I dare say that as many or more black bear have been shot here in Maine with a 30-30 lever action as there have with all other calibers combined with the possible exception of the 30-06.
Bow hunting bear is popular here as well.
The 7mm mag. is more than enough. Just hit them where it counts.
Your 7mm mag is more than enough for black bear and is sufficient for brown bear. Most states list 243 as the minimum caliber to hunt black bear with and I know it will do the job. I've seen several that were killed with 243's, .257's, and 260's. More is never a bad thing though as long as you can shoot it, so I'd stick with the 7mm mag if that's what you have. I wouldn't go down but I wouldn't go up either.
Hey, if you're looking for an excuse to feed the 'ole lady to buy a new rig.... then by all means!
Other than that, the 7rm is just fine. Not too small at all, you should have a bear rug on your floor in no time. Put'er where it counts & don't forget to smile when they take the picture.

"Honey, I need a new rifle for my black bear hunt. The experts say I need no less than a new AI AX 338 to kill one." "You wouldn't want it to suffer would you?"
I do both spring and fall black bear hunts in the N.W.T where i am from every year . black bears are resiliant animals but your 7mm is more than enough just place your shot in the good ol boiler room (heart+lungs) and he won't go far . i usually use my 308 with 150 grain winchester rounds , bear has never made it more than 50 yards
