7MM Rem Magnum Barrel Is All Shot Out

I've got an older Remmy 7mm Rem Mag. Unfortunately, the barrel is all done. It's time for a new one. Problem is, all the comon names in barrels want soooo much money for a barrel. The place I talked to today wants 880 dollars. They won't just sell me a chambered barrel. They want to work my action and all that. I'm just looking to replace what I've got. Take it to my gunsmith and have it fitted.

So, who makes a decent barrel that I won't have to take out a mortgage on my first born male child ... to afford. We have a decent gunsmith here local that can do the work just fine.

Hell, I'd be happy with a Remington take off barrel that has a varmint profile. Problem is ..... finding one. If you have a take off barrel you'd part with, let me know.

Here's what I need from a barrel. Mostly hunting. Occasional target shooting and some steel. Looking for a varmint barrel anywhere from #5 to #7 contour. .750 would be just fine. Standard twist is fine. Not really going to be shooting any really large bullets ... 180 and below.

Anybody know which direction to point me???

An action doesn`t need to be blueprinted to shoot great. Alot of rifle builders won`t barrel up an action either without blueprinting it first as not to get a bad name. But there is some gunsmiths that will do it for you. Expect to pay around $250 for chambering job. A decent barrel will cost around $250 and up.

If that takeoff falls through, you might want to consider ER Shaw. They are not as premium as competition custom barrels but are generally better than remington and good for the price point.

Jim Briggs at Northland Shooters Supply offers Criterion (Krieger Barrels button rifled division) for the Remington action that use Savage barrel nuts and Savage barrel nut wrenches.

$280-320 per barrel, $28 for the barrel nut and another $40 for the barrel nut wrench, add the cost of the headspace gauge and you are good to go.

In the last yr I've ordered 2 Kriegers from Bruno's, no wait at about $350 for the barrel, my smith with chamber and mount for $150. That's about $500, and they shoot .5moa with good ammo.

I spend way more on bullets than barrels.

My vote is for buying a Krieger cut rifle barrel from Bruno's Shooters Supply and having JD Thomas at High Speed Shooting Systems do the work on it. Your end result will be excellent and his work is guarenteed.

Another alternative is to send your rifle to Benchmark Barrels and have them do the work on it.
