7mm Rem Magnum convert to 300 Winchester Magnum

I was looking at getting a 700 Remington ADL in 7mm Remington Magnum and would like to use the Action to build a 300 Winchester Magnum. I can pick one up for about $350 new and figured I would sell the stock, trigger and barrel. I wanted to use the action to build a 300 winchester magnum. I was under the impression the bolt face diameter was the same and I wouldn't need extractor work done on it. Any reason why this is a bad idea or is there a cheaper easier way to get a 700 action.

No reason it is a bad idea at all. All you'll need is a new barrel.

Why in the hell would you go from a 7 to 30? 7 beats the 30 in every way! Rebarrel it with a quality 7mm barrel and it will keep up with just about any 338lm out to 1800+ yards with 180 VLD's (Berger or JLK)

There are very few 30 cal bullets that would even be worth considering in the 300wm vs. 7RM and they are all the heavies. the 7RM can push very slick and alot lighter bullets at the speeds necessary to make the same distances. The only real reason to go 30 cal is energy at the long distances.

Why not just buy a 300 Win if that is what you want?

You can find a 700P or Sendero or a 5r for half of what you would spend building one up, and all three of those are good rifles out of the box and come with decent stocks.

The other consideration is that you could have one now, rather than waiting a year or more to get one put together.

None of the ideas in this thread are bad ones.

Your money...your choice.

To answer some of the questions... The reason why I would be purchasing a 7mm Rem Magnum rather than buying one initially is that for $350 I can not get a 300 winchester magnum from Academy Sports. I was looking into building a rifle from the ground up and thought this would be a good way to get a receiver to build on. I originally had the idea to build a 300 winchester magnum because I was under the assumption brass and components availability was better for that caliber and ammunition would be cheaper and easier to find but I may be wrong. I'll have to look more into this. As for purchasing a 700p, sendero or a 5r right off the bat that's a good idea but I wanted something I would build from the ground up to be a little different. To that idea I actually purchased a 308 5r off of these boards a while back and have been very happy with it.

components and ammo is available for both cartriges but the 7mm rem mag beats the 3oo win mag in bullet drop and drift if comparing 180gr 7mm's to 210-220gr 30 cals. you have to push the 30 cal projectiles faster to equil the bullet drop and drift so that equils the 7mm. i say get a 7mm rem mag sendaro and start shooting bave the trigger adjusted and action bedded and they are ready to shoot to a mile with a 175gr MatchKing or 180gr VLD. the other thing we do is throat the barrel to allow the long projectiles to be seated out as the mag is made for cartriges as long as ultramags and this allows even more powder capacity and velocity Retumbo is a great powder for them.

The one we worked over for a clubmate his prefered loads consist of norma brass, fed 125 primers Sierra 175gr MatchKings and hodgdon retumbo it is awsome and will make it to a mile.

If you are planning "ANY BUILD" regardless of caliber-why not start with a new custom action.Save the cost of the donor rifle. The stock,barrel and bottom metal has no value compared to what is available now.

7mm gives you options that just aren't available to .30-then again if you want to consider a 338/30.......
