7mm RM reloading help

Hey guys/gals, so im very new at reloading, in fact this is my first attempt it. The price of rounds is overwhelming and the quality isnt really there. My buddy has a press, gauges and everything i need to get started and he is willing to let me use it all. Here are my questions. first off my goal is 750+ yrd shots on target average. I have pleanty of brass and mag rifle primers but my problem is deciding berger 168 or 180gr and for life of me which powder do i want to burn and how much? I want to squeeze as much FPS out of these rounds as possible SAFELY. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
in case it matters here is my rifle:
remington 700 sendero II (factory barrel) custom MCM stock, NF NSX 5.5-22x56 FFP scope, and timney trigger. the barrel does have a stiller precision break also. again guys any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 7mm RM reloading help

I'm partial to Hodgdons powder in my 7mm RM.
Have heard good things about VV and RL powders, but they're too temperature sensitive for my uses.

For 162 A-Max and 168 Berger, I've had good results with H4831sc, H1000, and H4350.
A retired guide I hunt and shoot with has been using H4350 and H4831 in the 7mmRM since the early 1970's, and H1000 since the early 1990's.

For the 180 Berger, I've had good results with H1000, H4831SC, and Retumbo. Retumbo probably has the most potential in 7mmRM with the heavy 180's.

Using the same.

67.4gr H1000 under Berger 168 running an average of 2865
66 gr Retumbo under Berger 180 running an average of 2888

FWIW...I never could get the 180s to settle down as good as the 168s.

Re: 7mm RM reloading help

My factory Remington 700 XCR 7mm Rem Mag is 1:9.5 and it shoots 162 A-Max's and 180 VLDs just great with Retumbo

Start Load for the 162 A-max is 69.0gr Retumbo; was yielding 1.5" groups at 200yds. I will be running OCW this weekend on higher loads/velocities.

Re: 7mm RM reloading help

Just to clarify a few things.

9.5 twist is right on the line as to whether 180 will stabilize well or not.

Sometimes a rifling button can be off to the slow side of things. Like for a factory 7mm barrel it's actual twist rate could be 9.75 or even the other way some like 9.25.

Example... I've had different 243/6mm rifles with factory 10 twist's. Some would stabilize 105 Amax reasonably well and some wouldn't. Other things to consider are altitude and how fast the bullet is driven.
