7mm WSM on Savage short action?

Is it reasonable to use the Savage short action with cartridges having a COL of 2.85? The action I have is the older blind stagger feed and I don't want to find half way into the project that it won't work out. In the case, it would be Hornady's 162gr. A-Max.

I would be great to hear from someone that has done it.

Savage "short action" is more like a medium length. Their centerfeed magazines give you about 3 inches.
