Alright Im new to this cartridge but already have a rifle put together for it. Its the Badger build that I posted pictures on last week. My one question is this...

I think the barrel is way to long! When I attach my suppressor its a good maybe 32" tube. What is the most popular length for the 7WSM cartridge? I am looking into cutting this barrel down some and just want to know my options right now for best barrel length or if I should NOT go any shorter then _____.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Re: 7WSM minimum bbl length?

Not sure if you are going to have the barrel set back in the future (when the throat gets scorched) so keep that in mind when cutting the barrel too short. Leave an extra 2" if a set back is in the plans.

I went with a 28" tube, so I could set it back to 26 and still have good speed.

Re: 7WSM minimum bbl length?

I think Glen Seekins is running a 22" barrel. That is the shortest I have heard of on the hide. Most people are going to be around 24-26". There are even some with 28" so they can cut it back once.

Re: 7WSM minimum bbl length?

I will admit to knowing very little on my own, but I was steered in the direction of 25" minimum by someone very knowledgeable. That is on a 7mm/300 WSM. I do not have the gun in hand yet so I cannot provide any direct feedback.

I run a 26 medium palma taper on mine.

Sounds about like mine at the moment. But plus the YHM suppressor its a long setup!

A little new info to revive an old thread. With proper load development, you can get 2940fps (and then some, but this was the most accurate in my rifle) with a 162 Amax out of a 22.5" 9 twist Bartlein. With the HTG, it makes for a handy lil' hammer.

G7 calcs are showing 7.3 mils to 1000!!! I'll post again after I verify.

Re: 7WSM minimum bbl length?

Very nice! I'm running my 162Amax load @ 2940fps also & very happy there. Could get another 100fps out of the 24" tube, but lose a little accuracy along the way...

Re: 7WSM minimum bbl length?

I run a 26" + can. I use a .308 20" w/ can or 16" AR w/ can as my short guns. A 7mm is made to reach out, so I kept the barrel long. Using Black Hills 162 AMAX at 2950 fps. (JBM verified, not chrono). Was fun shooting at 730 and not having to dial wind. I'm used to shooting my .308. I'm using the old Rem. Mag, not the WSM.

I'd go longer, not shorter for a magnum.
