Howdy,
Went to a long range seminar at the LGS last winter. It interested me. I always wondered how long shots are made. Still do but some mysteries have been revealed. Started collecting gear, rack grade off the shelf stuff. Broads/booze/addictions are cheaper btw. Got a rig put together end of summer and have enjoyed some range time and limited long range impacts with it. I’m in the Arctic and aside from dry fire am looking forward to more light and warmth for live fire. I’m at best a casual shooter. Goal is to get comfortable to 1000 yards.

Welcome to the Hide! - I spent a little more than four years in Fairbanks. With the exception of the first caribou, harvested two black bear, two caribou and a trophy bull moose all with a single shot handgun (Thompson Contender 45-70). The family loved it there but I had to do my duty and move on for Uncle Sam. My most memorable kill was the 1200+ pound moose 15 yards away. After I squeezed the trigger, I realized he could have stomped me into the tundra. As I reload and prepare for a possible second shot, he stumbled into a marsh and I was praying he wouldn't go down in it. He stumbled again coming out the other side and went to his knees and didn't get back up. Our family of five ate three to five meals a week off that moose for fourteen months and still gave away meet as we were packing to move to Virginia. I too have been bitten by the semi-long range bug. I have a .308 Win Savage I used in 1000 yd BR competition and I'm working on load development for a Ruger Precision Rifle in .243 Win. Getting comfortable shooting to a 1000 yards is easy enough for paper and steel. I'm not so sure I'd want to risk a wounded animal enough to try much beyond 600. By “on the banks” , as opposed to on the river, then touché. ? if you mean Fairbanks as Ken assumed, it’s nice to see another shooter from the interior. Most are down in the Matsu and Anchorage area. I’m on the Middle Yukon in the western interior, but all our flights come out of Fairbanks for this area. Welcome to the hide.

It’s good to see another from the Interior here. There’s a great group of local shooters. Some just got back from Shot Show and shared stories. I’m here to learn. Might be decent enough weather to visit the range today!
