I've decided this is going to be my next project. I've got a winchester 22-250 now with a 14 twist and plan on buying a pac-nor 3 groove 7 twist in the next few days. Going to keep it at 24" threaded for a can. I have no idea about terminal performance on game but I was expecting 3100fps with RL19. Not sure of the charge yet. It should keep up with most longrange setups with minimal recoil and less expense. I talked with berger about what twist to run and he responded "7". I was worried about overspinning them, if they blow I'll try the 75gr amax's. This will be a pure long range hunting rig so I won't be to worried about barrel heat and burnout. I hope someone can chime in with some experience.

I have a 7 twist 22-250 and run 80 amax bullets with Varget at 3200fps.
The 75's run well and are not over spun, but you really cant go below 70gr's
keep us updated I would be interested in that combo.
The 80gr Amax hammer deer here in TX and anything smaller will just pop like a balloon.

There is a Rem. 700 varmint special 22-250 in the safe that is due for this conversion. I've seen them shoot and it is a heck of a combo. Even a .223 will push them 2650 which works well out to 1000.

Yea I am debating the same thing. Im thinking 90g bergers, or 75g amaxes. With the BC of the bergers and weight, i think it would be a good long range hunting round. Just wanted to get some feedback. Will a 1:7 twist overspin the 75g amaxs?

7 twist doesn't over spin mine. I get a little under a 1/2" group with 80gr Amax bullets, and with the 75's its more like 3/4" at 100 but 300 and out to a 1K either are money!
80's at 2.5oal" w/ 33.5grns of Varget pops at 3190-3200
75's at 2.5oal" w/ 33.5grns of Varget pops at 3250-3275ish

thanks for the info. trying to decide on barrel contour now. I'm thinking light or medium palma, 24". I ordered some berger 90vld's to play around with seating depths so my smith can setup my chamber for into the lands. Looking forward to this one.

Five years back I built up a 22 x 47 Lapua, the necked down 6.5 x 47 L case's capacity is just a little less than the 22-250. I put a 1-8" twist Brux HV profile barrel on it and the receiver was one of Stiller's early predators.
I found the combination to be deadly with Varget and 80 g JLK's, I understand that Varget is considered to be to fast for this application but damn did it work good, 31 grains gave me 3,100 fps and 32 g 3,200.
One more data point that is pretty close to the 22-250.

I put a 7 twist shilen on my long range gun using a 22-243. I cant run 80 or 90 grain bergers without blowing them up at 25 yards. Was running about 3500 fps. Makes a real cool puff of gray smoke though. Just one data point.

I have run the 90 grain sierras in my 8 twist 22-243. They shot good, but i never really ran with it because the gun is just about shot out and I'm about to rebarrel. I plan on trying the 90 bergers in my next gun. If i remember correctly Litz' book shows the g1 bc of the 90 bergers @3000 fps to be right almost .600. With a 22-250 or 22-243 you should be able to push them atleast 3150+

I just put together a 223 for FTR w/ a 6.5 twist kreiger for 90s. For some reason I let my guy talk me into neck turning. So it is just sitting around waiting for me to turn necks. My gunsmith also told me to use a 6.5 twist for the 90s. I know people have luck here and there. I had a 9 twist 223 that shot lights out w/ 75 grain bullets. Sold it to buy the stock for this new one that probably won't shoot 4 shit.
But, 6.5 is what I have been told. The 6.5 will also undoubtably limit my ability to go lighter.
The loaded 223 w/ 90 grain bergers fit nicely into the new accuracy International 223 mags.
I loaded what looked Ideal for the mag and sent it to pacific tool and guage for them to make a reamer based on that. Backwards, but seemed clever when I did it.
