so far i have taken all the advice on rifle, caliber and so on. now that i have been loading and practicing i have a couple questions for distance shot. first, when weighing cases and bullets how much tollarence do you allow? is a tenth of a gram either way good? second, does anyone use hornady 168 match. i have been shooting 168 smk and thought id give hornady a chance. third, can someone give me a link to what all i need to take into consideration at 1000yrds and how to figure it all out. sorry in advace to those of you who think these are commen sense questions, but we all have to start somewhere.

Re: a couple newbe questions

Your uniformity tolerances are really up to you. Sample a batch to find the common range and ditch the outliers. With cases, for example, you can lay a long strip of duct tape on a table and mark the "target weight value" in the middle and add increments up and down from the value. As you sort you'll start to see a pattern emerge but the key is to identify the items that are out of spec. How anal you get about this is really up to you.

168s will piss you off when trying to get to 1000 yards - move up to 175SMKs or fast 155 Scenars. As for shooting that distance, I highly suggest you incrementally work your way up to that distance. Start at 100-300 yards. Here you'll get a good chance to see how bullet velocity and environmental conditions affect trajectory. When you're consistent at 300 move up another 200 yards or so. What you will find is the above will have an exponential affect on trajectory, making things trickier.

That's the game of long range shooting and part of what makes it a challenge. Good luck!

Re: a couple newbe questions

thanks dogtown. would i get better results being a learned from the 155s being lighter and not having as dramatic drop? or will it hurt me in windier conditions where the 175s would buck the wind better? im getting 1/2 moa out of the 168s with my current load at 100yrds. i might try to pick up so 175s and 155s and work up a load.

Re: a couple newbe questions

I would start out with 175 SMKs as they are pretty easy to load for. They are jump tolerant if mag length is an issue. I have not tried the 155 scenars yet due to being satisfied with the 175s. Lapua brass is by far the best. Start out with Varget on the powder.

Re: a couple newbe questions

i shoot my 308 win with 168gr a-max up to 1000 yards no problem.
hold's 1 1.5 min if i do my part

lapua brass, 168gr a-max ,44 gr varget 2.800 col.
works just fine

just my 2 cents
