Hows it goin gents? Question regarding a couple rifles. Ive been reading posts regarding the Remmy 5R and the 700P. Im interested in both rifles and want to buy one soon. For the price you pay for the 5R over the 700P, is it worth it in accuracy? I know that is a relative term but is it that noticable? Also, how much further in stable flight would one get out of a 300WM than a 308. I was always told that a 308 will start to go transonic around 1000m. How much further is a 300wm? Thanks for your time

Re: A couple questions

Are you reloading, or use manufacturer ammo? What bullet grains are you shooting? Of course the 190 grains is going to be a bit shorter than the 208 AMAX, which is what I use. At an altitude of 2200 feet, my 300 WM will stay supersonic out to just a shade above 1800 yards.

Re: A couple questions

Ill be using factory, probably Black hills at first. I have the gear and plan on getting into reloading after coming home from Iraq. Ill probably be running 175SMK in the 308 or 190 SMK in the 300wm. Im just trying to decide which round to go with. I know I can get the 700p and 5R in both rounds. I would just like to start narrowing it down

Re: A couple questions

the 300wm is great and I have two of them but if I had it to do over again my first would have been a 308. Reason being

cheaper to shoot
bullets are cheaper
use about 1/3 less powder
Brass is everywhere

I'm not sure where you live but trying to find a place to shoot past 1200yds is tuff to find around here. Also the 308 will get pushed around by the wind a little more wich will help you in really learning how to shoot in the wind.

The 300wm does have a little wow factor, the 308 you will be able to shoot 300 rounds vs 200 with the 300wm for the same money. I have only been shooting long range for 1 year and wish I could afford to shoot every weekend but the $$$$ just isn't quite there. The more trigger time you have will only make you a better shooter. Just my .02 cents

Good luck
Brandon

Re: A couple questions

Again, even if 1200 yards is your max distance that you can find around your area to shoot, then sticking to the 308 caliber is recommended. Just because it's cheaper to shoot. I was out with my friend recently and we were shooting 1200 yards target (chest size silhouette metal target). I was shooting my 300 Win Mag. My friend shot his Remy 700 XCR in an AICS 1.5 stock using FGMM 175 Grains. He got 1-2 hits with his 175 grains. It took quite a few more rounds to get there for him, but he got there. I started out with a 308.

Re: A couple questions

Im thinking that Im just gonna run a 308. Like stated about, its cheaper, easier to find and seems to be more than enough power. Now Im trying to figue out if I wanna roll with a 5R or a 700P. If I can get sub MOA out of a Police than I will probably go with that.

Re: A couple questions

A couple of days ago my son and I took our Remington 5Rs to the range. Mine is like it came from the box with the exception of the trigger (Rifle Basix) and scope Leupold 8.5:25x50.

My son had his barrel bobbed to 22" including a Badger Thruster, replaced the trigger with a Rifle Basix and it wears a 3.5:15x50 Nightforce.

From my 24" barrel I shot 15; 5 shot groups with factory ammo; TAP 168 avg group .749,
B.H.168 avg grp 1.076,
FGMM 168 avg grp .471,
FGMM 175 avg grp .979
B.H. 175 avg grp .687
Small Group .200 FGMM 168
Avg grp 15 grps. .792

My son's 22" with the Thruster brake and the same factory ammo did the following:
Tap 168 avg .925
B.H. 168 avg .644
FGMM 168 avg .551
FGMM 175 avg .544
B.H. 175 avg .605
Small group .386
Avg 15 groups .727

Not much difference in accuracy; same rifle 20" + thruster on one and 24" on the other, both weigh 10 lbs on the button.

Re: A couple questions

If it makes any difference to you the Army says that the .308 is effective up to 800yds, and the .300wm to 1200. Both will hit paper beyond that though, and would more than likely still be effective if you hit the target. I would suggest that in either caliber you get the rifle with the 5R barrel. It'll be easier to clean and was designed to be easier on the bullet. As in doesn't bite as much. Some would say that's heresay but that's why it's used in the M24.

I'm not sure the extra cost is for increased accuracy. The 5R is stainless and the 700P is CM. The stock on each of them is an HS Precision so not cost difference there.

I like the 700P more but not because it's more accurate. I don't enjoy the look of stainless as much as I do the look of parkerizing. If you live in an area with high humidity or where corossion is likely to be more of a problem get the 5R.

Re: A couple questions

Well guys, Ive decided. I spoke with a friend who recently left the Marine Corps as a 8541 and hes shooting a 5R. We discussed it for a while and hes convinced me that the Spec is the way to go. Wasnt too hard of a push considering all you guys have said aswell. Thank you guys for the help. Ill keep you all posted. Should have if in by the time I get home for leave. Ill post a thread with me and the new "Toy".
