Hi gentlemen,

On the markey for a barrel vice now, and I saw a few different styles.

I want one the works in conjunction with a bench vice, not something that has to be mounted on a bench as a stand alone unit. Preferably something that isnt dedicated to one countour/ barrel OD.

Whats the best breed/style of barrel vice for my needs and what practices ensure a long life of non-marring barrel removal/instalation???

ETA: Should I get a turque spec from my smith as to what torque he uses to secure the barrel to ensure consistant headspace?

Re: A good barrel vice, and good vice ediquite?

I have shot good groups with 10 foot pounds of torque on the barrel.
I have shot good groups with 1000 foot pounds of torque on the barrel.

Most people put barrels on with 100 foot pounds.

The torque will not change the headspace if the barrel shoulder and receiver large ring have enough mating area. The threads may crush, but a third of square inch of steel is not going to compress .001" with a few thousand psi.

Some people put thread locking compound on the threads.
Some put anti seize.
Some put oil.
Some put grease.
Some leave the threads naked.

WWII surplus Mausers and Mosins may take more than 1000 foot pounds to get them off. I use Kroil, 1000 foot pounds, and a 20 pound steel hammer strike on the action wrench.

I made my own when I started shooting benchrest. But both Sinclair's and Brownell's carry some well made units. Both have web searchable catalogs. Enjoy
