A little help with Savage .300blk build

Okay, here goes nothing.

I'm working on building a savage/stevens 300blk bolt gun. Got the action already and the barrel just came in from BFG design. I've been searching for a stock/bottom metal option.

From what i've read, i'm guessing that the Sharp Shooters Supply one won't work since it says .308 case family and don't seem to offer short mags.

The factory dmb would work i'm guessing but can't seem to find any way to get a hold of it...and then what would my mag choices be?

The only one i've found that seems like it would work is from CDI, but the reviews on their inletting have seemed pretty hit or miss.

I haven't decided on a stock yet and am still looking. My savage .308 has the choate tactical and i'm not a huge fan so i'll be looking for something else. It's way to heavy for the .300 build and the palm swell is huge.

Any recommendations on where to look for other options or anyone that can speak to the quality of the work from these companies would be greatly appreciated.

Check out XLR industries. They have a great stock (chassis) system that is fairly lightweight and super accurate. They will make it according to any action (I have one for my savage short action) and you can use AICS mags in it.

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

All depends on what your price range is and what kind of stock you are wanting. Mcmillan and Manners make some top notch stuff is what I have heard! I think the Mcmillan HTG would be and awesome stock for this type of build! Hope this helps, good luck!

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

I thought the XLR was too expensive, but when i thought about it, it's not bad since you have the stock and dbm already, instead of pay 200-500 for a stock, 100ish to inlet it, another 200ish for the dbm.

The only problem is, it seems like it would be too heavy. The choate tactical i have is lighter than that and weighs a lot. I could probably blame that on the huge barrel, but a 16.5 varmint with a can will be pretty close to the same weight I don't hunt and it will see range use mostly from 100-300 yards. I'm guessing for the stock i want to spend in the 300-400 range, leaving me with 300 or so to get the dbm into it.

Bell & Carlson and H-S Precision make good stocks for the money or so I've heard. I don't own either of them, I have a choate tactical and love it! I don't mind the weight since it is mostly a target and competition gun anyhow! I bet someone with more experience will chime in here soon and give you some help! Good luck

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

Accurate-Mag makes a DBM that replaces the standard savage DBM but converts it to take AICS mags instead of the standard savage mags. I had a model 10 with a blind center feed mag. I bought a stock (HS precision) that was pre-inlet for the standard DBM and then the Accurate-Mag product and I'm good to go. Love the whole system and I didn't have to do any inletting.

This sounds perfect Chad, but this is where i keep getting lost in my search.

The Accurate-Mag site says that the short action bottom metal (3.050) kit is compatible with many short actions including AI, Badger, Remington, Savage, and many other...but for cartridge says .300 WSM or .308. I'm lost as to will this work with .223 mags? I would think not since the COAL is much shorter for a .223/.300blk.

Anyone able to clear this part up for me? This always seems to be where i'm stuck, finding something that would accept .223 mags from any of the major manufactures...

Not sure what is meant by this but not all stock angles are the same in relationship with the barreled action. My 2 700s are excellent and I wouldn't hesitate to send a savage to Jeff.

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

I just had seen some complaints on some looking a bit rough, but that is probably what it comes down to since there are so many different stocks out there. The complaints i saw were related not being flush.

I saw the new post with a lot of good things, hopefully all the kinks are worked out since they are still looking like my best option.

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

Ryan, I looked at the accurate mag sight. They only talk about DBM for .308 sized cases and bigger. I do not know if the SA size will accept .223 sized mags, but I'd doubt it. I also checked out the CDI sight and found no mention of the .223 sized mag. From what I hear from my research before going with the accurate mag system Jeff (CDI's owner) is a great guy and is happy to get phone calls with questions about his product.

Re: A little help with Savage .300blk build

I sent Jeff an email and figure he'll get back to me when he has free time. From what I can gather, CDI's dmb uses AICS .223 mags, which are the same size externally as the .308 ones. I could be wrong on this, but that means it would work just fine.

Pricing it out though, it seems that by the time i buy a stock, bottom metal, and have it inletted, i'm pretty close to the same price as the xlr chasis...so it's not really a price issue in the end.

So in the end i'm looking at 500-800 for the stock, dbm setup, mags and everything else i need will be separate.
