A lucky pair of skydivers...

Here’s a working link:

This is near me. We have a lot of skydivers in this area and therefore our share of accidents.

These two were indeed fortunate, but that is likely due to the sense of the experienced pro who was part of the tandem dive. Tandem dives are often the first dive of a newbie, done strapped to an experienced diver or instructor.

They landed in a tree and took down the tree. I believe the tree helped to break the impact for them. Probably not by accident.

Can you imagine taking your first skydive only to have the chute fail?

Edit: Jefe beat me to it while I was typing.

My buddy came out last year about this time to drop his kid off at the Air Force Academy. They had a scheduled jump, they both just completed their solo cert, before they went to the Academy and asked me to go. It was a big fuck no from me! Now I'm sure. 🤓

Wel, at least no one was shooting at them once they landed.

I jumped once at 12,500. Fun as fuck and I would do it again. Not the first time I have heard of failed chutes and aiming for trees or bushes and living to tell the tale. Fuck that would still hurt though.

Shit , 1st thought on seeing the Vid. , thought that it was just 2 jumpers doing CRW and doing a down plane . Then they said it was a Tandem jump and it was instantly clear, they both were riding all the way down to the deck totally Fucked .
Tandem master is a pilot with a passenger and totally responsible for everything happening . The Main canopy was not released for some reason ? ,
Main and Reserve both out .. You in the middle .. and that is the nature of the beast, when 2 square parachute out. They both turn Nose-down and don't Stop till the dirt .
.

At Eglin AFB in the early 80's the jump master made a,...slight,...mistake. 3500 being all they could be were dumped into the trees an swamp, filled most every hospital in the Fla panhandle. I was there servicing some shit, an if you could walk an chew gum at the same time no matter who you were your ass went to help,..what a shit show that was.

Hopefully they are good, I've witnessed too many malfunctions over the years the first was my father's around 1963 ish that turned out well, the others not so much except for one.
I'd still jump out of a perfectly good aircraft,
Since they have yet to build one.
Even my wife has 1 jump (nightjump) around noon jump master perfectly placed her in ass the middle of a 20 foot pea gravel target, and still she broke her ankle.
Mother's day 1978.

Would you if you could cut away one of the chutes so one would work properly ?

Two chutes are not better than one, first they spill air so you fall at the same rate.
The hazard is they can get twisted, square chutes are probably worse because of their inherent faster forward speed.

Terminal velocity = maximum speed of the fall, from any height that will allow that, given the aerodynamic drag.
Even a chute that has malfunctioned would be better than none.
Time and altitude is a friend or enemy, don't know what happened, hopefully if they survived we might find out.
I've seen jumps that went wrong, they hit hard and were talking to medics and died about two hours later from internal injuries.
If you have never jumped, it's something you can have one of the biggest adrenaline rushes and missed out of.
your chance's of dying is a lot less likely than driving a car and a hell of a lot more fun.
Unless, what buffalowinter said.

The only way my ass is going out of a plane is when someone smashes my fingers dug into the doorway and drop kicks my ass out.
All good, usually they don't force anyone out, just don't be at the head of the line when the peeps behind you want to go.
That doesn't score any points.

Told my son about my first jump. Told him how i got to the door, and froze. The jumpmaster screamed “jump!” Seconds later, he yelled “JUMP!!” Then he whipped out his 11” cock and screamed “if you dont jump out that fucking door, i am going to shove this cock up your ass!!”

My boy looked at me with wide, incredulous eyes, and asked “did you jump, dad?”

And i said “well yeah, i jumped.....i told you...it was 11 inches”

1st jump as an 18 y/o college 'smart guy', behind parent's back and against their wishes in the 70's. 3k ft static line jump, main chute streamer, cut away, Steven's static line to reserve snaps without deployment due to bent pin thru retainer sleeve, beat the snot out of it to land under reserve canopy. Probably 5 seconds of actual deployed chute time. Jumped 6 more times, saw jump masters tootin up before a jump and that was that. Only intelligent move in the whole process.

You can only cutaway ( one ) the Main canopy, and that by the release system .
but Reserve canopy can be deployed ( manually or electronically ) .

Most Tandem jumps deploy pretty high with the Main canopy on a jump for a relaxing canopy ride .. usually around 4500 AGL . So that was a LOoooooonnnG time for both pilot and passenger to ponder the view before pounding in.

G-force of the spinning Downplane is BIGGER than it looks on the Video . So disorientation is 'constant' a force of Fact for the whole ride to the deck, with pilot decision making in the Fuckup .

The Tandem passenger does not know shit from top to bottom clueless . Only one who knows is not talking, either dead, unconscious or not talking publicly . In this Litigious society I feel for both Pilot and the DZ operation . Lawyers be salivating .

Who knows ? .. all the Video shows is ( both canopy out ) and them taking it all the way to the deck . BUT .. there is an AssLoad of things that might have happened ?
Passenger could have fought with pilot in freefall, and deployed Reserve premature in freefall ?
Passenger threwup cheap PBR and hotdogs in freefall, and blew chips all in the tandem pilots mouth, nose and face, and pilot said ..." fuckit I will show you, How you like spinning muthafuka ? "

I don't know what Tandem system they were using ? , There are several design and tandem rigs out there . different systems/different Cert's. and safety procedures for all.
Might be a accidental Rigging error/mistake on the packing of Reserve canopy in the container system ?
Might be some medical or physical injury to pilot on the jump, keeping the Main canopy there from being cutaway ?
( before Main's deployment ) . Might have been a electronic malfunction / AAD premature firing of the Reserve canopy ?
Maybe AAD was set at a improper pre-jump attitude ? , and it deployed the Reserve canopy higher altitude that planned ? , Then the Main was cutaway 'manually' and tangled with Reserve in freefall and inflated to make the Downplane ?
Might have been an intentional Cutaway malfunction of the Main ? , and if container system has a RSL . 'reserve release lanyard' . it is connected to the Main set of Risers and it auto pulls reserve system and it's deployment/extraction, as the Main canopy is dragged-off in the free air ?

HAhaLOL .. You not comfortable with bribing your JM with drugs to get high and drag his ass out of bed, so to take you up and put you out for your static line progression checkoff's ?
...it was the 70's .

Coin of the Realm no doubt while ' lookin' for adventure'. One of em bounced about 6 mo later. Bad ju ju. Wouldn't trade it, other-worldly experience, but wouldn't repeat it.

And 2 Egg McMuffins. But they had to be warm.

Thank you,
