Re: A old timer needs some help

if you got the correct action wrench and barrel vice......lined w/gypsum board tape for the barrel.....what is needed is a cheater bar.......i'm here to tell to a seriously L O N G bar to give you the leverage.....its doubtful that there is any glue from the factory on the threads.....but if it is in fact suspect....heat applied via a propane torch would warm up the whole deal and allow some freedom.......

Re: A old timer needs some help

Because of your location there may be some light rust hindering your progress. Some of the older(because you say 222) have a white colored antiseize, threadlocker, whatever you call it on them. As boltripper stated I to have used a small LP torch and heated front ring and or barrel to a point hot enough I cannot hold onto them for any length of time. In every case that made removeall possible. Might not be the way the pros do it but it worked for me and didn't hurt anything I have worked on.

Paying shipping both ways will cost a bit. Not trying to be a smart ass but paying a smith to disassemble with proper tools would have been much cheaper than a ruined action or could have had whoever does your barrel work remove them at that time. I know what it is like being broke with huge medical/prescription costs and it truely does suck!

Re: A old timer needs some help

Try a little heat from a propane tourch on the O.D. of the action. And not enough to burn the finish off, just enough to heat it a little.

Re: A old timer needs some help

Get another person to help you,and put a large cresant wrench on the recoil lug.Turn the action wrench at the same time as the creasnt wrench.Sorry about your health problems and bills, hope you are recovering. Pete

Re: A old timer needs some help

If the barreled actions were chucked up in a lathe, the barrel shoulder could be cut away, very close to the action. This would relieve the torque on the threads.

Re: A old timer needs some help

Pale,

if you sawcut just ahead of the action/recoil lug, about 1/4" depth or a little more, that will relieve the steel enough for you to remove the barrels in standard fashion without ruining the action...No heat needed, but you can 'warm' the action at the thread junction, just enough to get the molecules moving.
