Fall is ending it's annual color panorama here in Taos, NM. While we do not have the magnificent reds and purples of the Northeast US, we do, particularly this year, have quite the colorful display due to the dry Fall we have enjoyed. This past May I reached a true milestone when I celebrated my 70th birthday. What is clear to me, is that despite my advancing years, I am still active and I decided to take up the sport of precision shooting. While I had training in the military police, and shot throughout my life, I just had to join the millions of Americans now participating in this sport. I will not get bogged down in all the technical data, but to say that I started modest. Bought a Bergara B14 HMR rifle and a Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 scope. A good place to begin to learn.

What is important to me, I have met, and been influenced, so many experts and new shooters here on Sniper's Hide to help guide me through stages to become a competent precision shooter. Yes, having new toys to play with outdoors is truly amazing, and learning and practicing is even better, but what really inspires me is being outdoors here in Northern New Mexico with access to thousands of square miles of BLM and Forest Service land to learn my craft. Being outdoors on cool, crisp mornings is, for me, a thrill! The "home range" I have selected is about 20 miles north of Taos, and less than a mile, east of the Rio Grande River. On a clear day I can see over a hundred miles, and shoot out to a mile if I choose. My point in all of this, is to encourage all of my fellow octogenarians to enjoy these golden years with new experiences and challenges. We are so blessed to live in this country, despite some difficult times. It would be great to hear from other members who might have similar feelings, and the challenge of learning. Best!

Your locale closely resembles ours here in SE AZ, except ours is dryer.

We're in a Wildfire season right now, and most of the BLM land in the state is closed to camping and target shooting.

I have an Apricot tree in my front yard, and it's just beginning to turn yellow and a few of the leaves are already shed.

The land in our area is largely given over to agriculture and cattle, and in truth, not a lot of it around here is vacant and available for shooting.

I originally come from the Northeast, and the land here is simply beautiful by comparison. Politics is also day and night different.

Annual color panorama???? There aren't any leaves.....
OK Thumper, you got me there. Well, the leaves in the mountains have largely fallen by mid October, but I have a carpet of leaves in my front yard. Take a look at my yellow lab, Rio, making photogenic! It has been a wonderful Fall in northern New Mexico. Where I shoot is Piñon, Sage, and Cedar country a mile east of the Rio Grande Gorge. I’ll do better next year with photos. My wife is the real artist.
