Lol yeah it would be a little heavy, nothing that can not be carried around. A few more pounds for a lot more firepower is more than worth it to me.

sounds to me that this would be more viable elsewhere. Isn't the general idea of 'marksmanship' to be <span style="font-weight: bold">one</span> or <span style="font-weight: bold">few</span> well placed shots?
As opposed to 'spray and pray'?
Or maybe this addition of mass is to help someone in particular who feels that the recoil is overbearing?
I'm just asking.....

A marksman is nothing with out having ammo on hand. This question is asked because 1. I have a 100 round drum for my A.R. 15 and I love it. 100 rounds off ammo on hand without having to reload is a great thing. 2. being able to easily carry 100 rounds on the go is another great thing. 3. Using a drum does not mean you just spry like a fool. 4. I rather have it and not need it than not have it and wish I did. 5. I love the way it looks.

100rds loaded in 30 magazines weighs less than a beta cmag loaded with 100rds for the AR-15. Plus it's bulky and takes up way more space. Offhand it sucks to hold. I can only imagine that on the .308 this would be even worse.
They're fun and that's it. Even in a competition setting they wouldn't give you a real advantage.
Beta made a 7.62 version of their drum and one is M14 compatible. The Armalite AR-10 mag started out as an M14 mag, so I could easily see a new tower being made from an AR-10 mag or modifying the M14 tower on the beta mag to fit the AR-10.

I was thinking more of a combat setting engaging a lot of targets at high speeds. cutting down on reloading is a big advantage to me. I also like the feel of the drum. Once you get used to it at least. Once the drum in the mag well you can have more mags on had can carry even more ammo. If shit hit the fan and you need to take off on foot, I want all the ammo I can carry.

Practice mag changes then. Mags take up less space and weigh less.
Drums pretty much have only been used effectively on light machine guns. (RPK) I doubt you'll ever be in a situation where suppressive fire would be a good course of action. And you wouldn't have the supply lines to use your ammo in such a way. If the "SHTF" ammo conservation would be of utmost importance.
Keeping 100rds in a mag that could potentially get jammed up or damaged means that's 100rds you no longer have access to. (There's this saying about eggs and baskets or some such...)
Really, just admit it. It's just for fun. Proning out and banging steel for a long duration with no mag changes and no breaking position just feels neat.
Oh yeah, and the best way to store ammo for weight and size is on stripper clips. Just add a spoon for an M14 and older style AR-10 mags and you're good.
