Nutshell- ww2 vet, then a cpt, played his trumpet one night despite the threat of a German sniper. The next day, the sniper was one of the POW's about to be sent to England. The German found out who played the song and thanked him. It caused him to realize he wanted to live for his family instead of fight and die for Hitler.
