A toast to the venerable Remington 700 5R mil-spec

OK, a conundrum for me. Have had some shoulder problems & wanting to put a brake on my 5-R as I'd love to shoot & enjoy it more.

But while not a benchrest class rifle it will shoot in the 3's, & probably less, I'm hesitant to start screwing with the muzzle. I do have a smith that goes slow & is very meticulous so that's a comfort. But I'd feel & actually be so stupid if I screwed up a gun that's been this good to me. OTOH, it's just a damn gun.

Factory ammo in .223?

No. I don't think I ever shot factory ammo in it. I shot 75 Amax hand loads for years. I had more that 5,000 rounds through it. It was a 1:9 twist barrel but shot the 75's really well.

My Rem 700 308 says 5R on the box and is a 1:10 twist.
So I guess 5R barrels come 1:10 and Milspec 1:11.2?

Mines changed a little over the years but it’s my favorite rifle. This thing has always been a hammer. Super easy to find loads it likes. It’s been in the same config for years now. Sits in a manners t4a with mini chassis, Timney flat trigger, gap bolt knob, vortex razor gen 1, and threaded barrel.

Mines changed a little over the years but it’s my favorite rifle. This thing has always been a hammer. Super easy to find loads it likes. It’s been in the same config for years now. Sits in a manners t4a with mini chassis, Timney flat trigger, gap bolt knob, vortex razor gen 1, and threaded barrel.

Finally picked up a silencer, shes ready to go now.

You guys are making me impatient and envious. I dropped off my beloved 5r with Nine Run Gun early December. I finally decided to make it what it should be like you two gentlemen. Those are very nice!

They’re great rifles. I bought mine in 2012 and had SAC cut any thread the barrel at 20” and put it in a Manners T2 stock. It’s fantastic for an otherwise factory barreled action.

So mine is completed now with a full refresh. Also Figured I should compliment it with an Allen Engineering M24 supressor.

My orginial has a newer 9 twist 5 R barrel on it. It's 22" with detachable mag for heavy bullets and hybrid cases, shooting 208 gr Berger hybrids at 2670 fps. Or new 177 SMK at 3045 fps, 155 gr 3100 fps.
It gets a fair amount of abuse.

First 10 rds after a quick zero since getting it back. Still the factory barrel just cut and worked for the M24 supressor. Still shoots with the old load.

Pretty close to a load ive been using lately. How long is your barrel and what is the velocity ?

Here lately I've just been loading 45gr of varget and a 175/178 in lapua or sig hybrid cases and burning up old win LR primers. Accuracy is always right around .5 moa and velocity is between 2720 and 2740 from a 20" 9 twist lilja.

The 175 Aeromatch did real well for me last week on 3" steel out to 600 yards at my local gun club. I didn't want to like the smk knockoff but it shot really well. Going to load 20 more and push it farther this weekend against the 178 eld-m.

2590 was a 11 shot avg 20” barrel. Load was I think 2610 memory serves me right. Was very little loss.
