Looking for some suggestions for a good all around bullet. It will be shot out of a Larue stealth with a 20 inch barrel. Primary use will be long range varmints and long range steel, Possibly an occasional match. I like the 77 smk's but they just blow through groundhogs and I do not feel like walking 500 yds to confirm hit or miss. I am leaning more towards the 60gr VMAX. Want to reach out accurately to 600 to 700 yards. Primary powder will be H335 but would also use Varget if I need to.

Re: Accuracy and killing power for 223

I would go with the 60gr Nosler BT instead since it's a BT bullet and may do better at longer range and it's just as deadly as the V-max.

Another good choice is the Sierra 63 Grain Semi Point. Very accurate and it does a number on critters. This is my go-to bullet for my 1:9 twist Kimber Longmaster Classic. H-4895 or Varget work really well.

While we at this site prefer, in general, using one loading for all tactical purposes (in the intrests of accuracy); long range varmits and match are sufficiently different that a different bullet should be chosen (along with the ramifications of separate loadings, ballistics, and zero points.)

this is my first w/a .223.....55grn amax, clipped the back bone and shut down the rear traction till i dumped two 147's behind the ear close up suppressed
these 55grn amax are target bullets that blow up inside the animal.......trust me ...they are very nice to 500yd also

Bolttripper,
I believe you are reffering to the VMax not Amax. I think the A max is only 52grain or 50. Mitch I was looking for an all around bullet that someone might know of. Not looking at shooting paper matches possibly just a few steel matches if I can make it out to TVP. Thanks for the responses.

Re: Accuracy and killing power for 223

77 nosler, 77 smk, 75 hornady bthp are your best bets if you want an all-around bullet that is mag fed. At what range are you varminting realistically? if 300 or so max check out the 60 vmax (the one in the tap rounds), it is a great bullet and was absolutely explosive when I used it on a coyote.

or 75gr hday bthp if coal is an issue

Re: Accuracy and killing power for 223

I have 600 75 gr Amaxes that I can not use The COAL is to long for mag fed. I would like to use the 77 SMK but I know the 168 SMK's out of my 308 will usually just blow right through a Ground hog past 400yards and we usually have to watch the video in slow motion to even see if it was just close or in deed a hit. We usually shoot anywhere from 300 to 600 at groundhogs. I figured the 77 smk's would do the same.

Honestly if you want the high velocity *splat* varmint kills at those ranges I think you will have to go with more caliber. I do know several guys using the 52 amax on varmints at longer ranges as well as 52bthp from other makers and they are all pushing them around 3400-3500fps muzzle (22-250 etc). 20" ar will be about 3000-3100 max so won't reach as far and the wind will get you. To negate the wind you could try a 77 grainer but then you will be 2700 or so fps at max, maybe 2800 if you load like a crazy man. So it will certainly work if you can hit them but it may just "pass through." Never know until you try though.

Re: Accuracy and killing power for 223

Not looking for a splat just for the hog to die or at least give a definite sign of being hit outside of his hole.

coldbore I will most likely sell them PM me with a reasonable offer.`
