I recently picked up an AX short action with the large firing pin. While I haven't tried it with a small primer load, in the event the large firing pin doesn't work properly, what are my options? Buy a new bolt assembly? If I buy a new bolt, do I need to be concerned with headspace or is it like my Desert Tech, where the bolts are essentially interchangeable? Does having the firing pin bushed correct the issue?

just have to get your firing pin bushed

@lowlight ’s theory is the issue with large pin vs small primer is headspace. With theory being if you let a smith take the exact measurements for your individual AI action, you likely won’t have the problem.

    If you do, your options:

Buy new bolt and/or firing pin assembly

    Having it bushed.

Both work fine and won’t have any issues.

i have had 6 new bolt assemblies in the shop in the past week. All the bolts measured within .0005” of each other. In other words they were identical. When I measured the large pin assemblies they were perfect. And just yesterday I measured 2 bushed bolts, mine and a friends they were within .001” of the new large & small bolts.

have it done by LongRifles or a quality known smith that can work on these bolts. They’re as hard as a honeymoon pecker. I’ve seen a few that they touched the face to much and set it back .005”. That would put all factory barrels out of spec.
Buy AI small pin or Long Rifles would be safest bet.
