In my years of reloading I have noticed that the hottest loads tend not to be the most accurate. Growing up my pop had a 100 yd range in our back yard. 99% of my rifle shooting has been 100 yard target shooting. I think I once read an article in one of the gun rags back in the day that suggested 100 yards was not far enough to test rifle bullet accuracy. 300 yards was the suggested starting point. If I have a mid range load that is the most accurate at 100 yards will it be the most accurate at 300 yards? Will a hotter load be better for long range because the wind affects it less? I will be developing a load for my AR with a white oak 1/8 DMR BBL soon. I will think of this as a >200 yard gun. I will load 68-77gr bullets for it. (I might play with some 55gr V-max for coyotes. How do the match bullets perform on yotes??) I will be doing most of my first loads with Ramshot TAC powder, Hornady 75 gr match and Nosler 77gr Match bullets. Anyone have any guidance for me on this?
