My friend just bought a rifle with an Ackley barrel. The guy he bought it from said it was built 3 years ago by savage. I can't find anything about their barrels except they haven't made them in a long time. I haven't seen the gun yet but it is supposed to have a heavy barrel and be a 7mm mag. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me anything about their barrels.

Re: Ackley Barrels?

Ackley does not make barrels any longer, nor did Savage ever chamber any factory gun in a non SAAMI spec'd chamber or a barrel other than their own.

What does the stamp on the barrel say? Post pictures if you can and we will try and help you to figure out what it is.

It would seem you have a Savage action with an aftermarket barrel of some sort. I have never seen one, but heard that ackly made his own barrels, and then worked with a company out of Salt Lake City called EMDEKO to produce some 5 groove button rifled barrels with his name of them at one point. These barrels were typically built in to Interarms Mark X rifles and not sold as blanks. Perhaps you have an old pre EMDEKO Ackley barrel that was just chambered 3 years ago?

Re: Ackley Barrels?

I will try to get some pictures from him. I was thinking the same thing that it was possibly a take off barrel from someone. He didn't spend very much on the rifle and it is just for hunting so he won't be out too much if it sucks. The story was the guy sent the barrel to savage who put it on the model 10 action.

Re: Ackley Barrels?

It is more likely that someone reamed an AI chamber into a factory Savage barrel. If the barrel is marked with all the Savage markings and perhaps an 'AI' added behind the caliber, then that is a clear indicator that it was rechambered. If it has no other factory markings and a caliber stamped on it (or not stamped on) then that is most likely the work of a 3rd party. Savage, as someone else pointed out, never did an Ackley caliber from the factory.
WHICH AI caliber is it (allegedly) out of curiosity?

Re: Ackley Barrels?

I bought a 30-06 barreled action back in the late 80's with Interarms Mark X action. Barrel was marked P.O.Ackley so this must have been one of the above mentioned barreled receivers? It shot pretty durn good!
