What can you do while fireforming AI brass that doesn't make it just wasted barrel? Is it worth it to work on different charges for pressure signs? Also, should you use lighter or heavier bullets when fireforming?

Re: Ackley fireforming question

Hunt, swing steel, etc...

Rounds down range are never wasted barrel, IMHO.

I use mostly cheap bullets for FFing. It just so happens they're Vmax's, and they shoot good.

YMMV.....

Re: Ackley fireforming question

You'll be amazed at how accurate FFing loads can be...

Figure it out for your own rifle, as in work something up, but I always end up shooting max loads for the parent case.

Killed a LOT of groundhogs fireforming....

Re: Ackley fireforming question

Having 2 (243, and 6.5-06) I use max loading info for the caliber. For me the one that shoots the best that is the one I work up. seems to work for me. My 6.5-06ai shoots so good with unformed brass its going to be scary when she is dialed in with formed max loads. No groundhog will be safe at any distance

Re: Ackley fireforming question

Well an Ackley improved chamber is a tight crush fit on a factory case ( or it should be ) so that takes out some of the lack of centering of unfired brass used in a normal factory chamber.

Re: Ackley fireforming question

When I put my 243 AI together I used some know loads that were near max with 95 SMK's... Got a one hole 5 shot group and many 1/2" group while playing... Set my barrel up to just slightly crush a factory round when I put here together and makes a pretty little case... for thos that noticed the finished case is sporting a 105 Berger....

This was the first target I shot firforming... so yea they can shoot just fine when fireforming... 1-2 is five shots... Started fooling with the scope after that... Bottom row is where I had backed it up to get head in a better position...

Off to the range shortly to try out another scope I put on it yesterday.. Will have to get more rings later it's time to play today...

That's nice shooting and that's how the AI should work.
How many thousands crush fit did you use ? I've used .010 for 30-06 AI but I am not sure that is optimum .

Re: Ackley fireforming question

Way I used my go gauge, should be around.03... If I did it right... I know I got the feel just as describe it should be when I bolt fresh brass.. I snugged barrel to the go gauge and tighten nut and the line up marks I put on it barely move apart...

Re: Ackley fireforming question

I was thinking that .010 was a bit much as I have to lean on the bolt a fair bit with some brass . So I might move back to .005 on this next barrel I am doing. I think as long as there is some crush on the shortest brass I am likely to use then all is good .

Re: Ackley fireforming question

I fire form 257 Roberts Ackley Improved from 257 Roberts brass, 10 gr of any pistol powder, back fill with instant cream of wheat, and if to be fired horizontally at the range, then I put Ivory soap in the case mouth to seal in the cream of wheat.

I got the cream of wheat sales job from famous [or infamous] gunsmith Jack Belk on AR forum, before he got bursitis in his shoulder and went off line.

If you plug that load into Bart Bobbitt's [another guy I have lost track of] formula for barrel wear for your cartridge, you will see it is a small fraction of the wear of normal load.

Re: Ackley fireforming question

I went the cream of wheat rout on a custom .300 long range round. I used a junker barrel that the smith chambered just for the purpose of fireforming brass as he was afraid of wrecking the match barrel through the process. I have since found a much better way.

I have become (I think) wiser and with my 6mm Cheetah (similar to the 243 AI) I did all of my fireforming shooting prairie dogs from 100-560 yards ... fireforming can be VERY accurate and it is MUCH more fun when shooting at highly mobile, reactive self-replenishing targets.

Note the accurate load you develop for fireforming may change - mine did not.
