Ok, I got a TA31TRD about a year ago. I love it. I just had to have the red dot up top. But the first time I had to figure out what to do w/ the cap for the dot I was a little perplexed. Do I put it in my pocket? Yes I did, at first. I figured out a better way and figured I'd share it w/ you guys....

First I beveled the edges of the hole in the ACOG body w/ a flash hole deburring tool. It's sharp from the factory. Then I secured the dot cap to the ACOG body w/ a piece of flyline backing and a couple bowlines.

In the shot above notice the o-ring that I gorilla glued to the windage turret cap. It's an R-17, 13/16 I.D., 1-1/16 O.D. thick o-ring from an o-ring kit I got from NAPA. It will hold the cap out of the way while you've got the dot employed. See below.....

Hope this helps

Re: ACOGs w/ red dots up top

Thats a pretty cool idea! How do you like the red dot on top? I've just used my ACOG as primary optic, once you deal with a big red dot and put it high it works decent.
But what you need to do now is mount your base with the thumb screws on the right. My issued ACOG came like that and loved it. When I went home for a couple days end of June I swapped my own.
Its really nice having the left side free of knobs. That way you can give the bolt release a good love tap. And in a hurry work your charging handle alot more efficiently.

Re: ACOGs w/ red dots up top

Nah, next thing will be a LaRue mount w/ levers, that way I can fit a Troy rear sight under the ocular bell. I noticed the bolt release was still kind of accessible, but it won't be a problem soon. Maybe I'll get one of those MagPul BAD doohickeys. The dot up top rocks, I just 0d it @ 25yds and it's good to go.

Re: ACOGs w/ red dots up top

I'm thinking about the BAD for my RRA "M4" since I run their Tactical Carry Handle on it. The principle behind it is a solid one. As far as using irons, I've got the Matech on my other RRA and the ACOG sits nicely above it. It works good enough for me that I haven't considered other BUIS and therefore not needing a higher mount.

Re: ACOGs w/ red dots up top

Is it the Matech that you can adjust out to like 600? I've been considering getting one, but I've always liked Troys back up irons. All of my ARs w/ the exception of my AR-10 are RRA. .223, 6.8 and .458SOCOM. I liked the RRA carry handle w/ a rail up front and full rear sight. Once I get a piston kit and longer rail to go over it, I'll probably have Troys front and back.
