Guys, need some advice on problems I have with holes not matching up between the base and action. I have been trouble shooting (pun intended) the rifle in question (Rem 700/7mm mag)for a while and reading/searching a lot at SH. Long story short, I tightened the second screw(middle) on the front of the Leupold (one piece)base, both front and rear were removed to test for gap between rear of base and action. Yes the gap was there, also I noticed the hole at rear of base and action do not match. They are off enough that to get the screw started I have to pull the base over with my fingers. Not good. Could I just try a new base, maybe get lucky getting the holes to line up, or though I would rather not use one is a two piece the answer. Thanks, and I'll keep using the search button.

I wouldn't go 2 piece, if the action holes are screwed up you could tweak the scope.

Could just send it to a smith to have the holes aligned and enlarged at the same time, but I'd likely try a different one piece base first.

Re: action/base problems

I'd personally try out a high-quality 1pc base (Remington 700 LA) from someone like Badger Ordnance, Nightforce, Seekins, etc. I have never seen one of their bases be out-of-spec, but unfortunately...I can't say the same for Leupold which might very well be the source of your problems. If that doens't resolve the issue, then it is time to get a professional involved because it is likely an issue with the holes in your receiver being drilled out of spec. Like jasonk said...send it to a smith and have the holes properly aligned/enlarged.

Re: action/base problems

Thanks for your input and time guys. I held a straight edge up to the holes, the action mounting holes seem to line up and the holes on the base seem to be off. Maybe it will be an easy fix, ie. New base. Again thanks.

Re: action/base problems

If the holes in the action are off, a new base won't help. You need to have the hole spacing evaluated with something other than a straight edge.
