Hi guys, quick question, can a action true up be performed on a other than "new" rifle? May the rifle have a couple hundred, if not thousands of rounds down range at the time the work is done?

I may be buying a R700P with an unknown round count (will get info on it later, hopefully 1K) and wanted to see if the round count had an effect over what kind of work would i be able to perform on the gun.

Also what gunsmith you guys recommend? Im thinking Chad Dixon, Long Rifles Inc.

Let me know!!

Thanks guys.

Re: Action true up

Id be happy to do the work for you. Just know that your existing barrel will either become a "tuhmater stake" (meaning replaced) or set back enough for a new tennon. The threads in the receiver are machined a little bigger and the old tennon won't fit properly.

Be happy to help.

Ok mister Dixson, im mechanically inclined so im getting the idea you are imparting me. I just looked for the SnipersHide Google engine and coudnt find it.

I need some light about "tuhmater stake". If i understand correctly, by settling back for a new tennon you mean sitting the barrel further on the reciever and re-threading, right?

Thanks for the fast reply.

Re: Action true up

I got a Rem700 7mmRM take off barrel off Ebay for $33 + $7 shipping.
I have a lot of old junker barrels and I grade the bores.
This one was as good as they get, short of a factory lapped bore.
I put it on a $140 1908 Brazilian Mauser rifle, cutting threads and the 7mmRM chamber an inch deeper.
I welded the bolt handle, drilled and tapped the action, and converted the bolt face, extractor, and magazine lips to Magnum.
I put a VZ24 take off stock on it and glassed it.
I glassed under the scope mounts.
I did something of a trigger job.
I put a large limbsaver recoil pad on it.
I screwed some Uncle Mike's sling mounts into the stock.

It was just a practice project, but it shot a .75" group at 100 yards.
It will probably never get another trip to the range, but it amazing what you can sometimes do with a tomato stake.

I think he's talking about using the Manson/PT&G kit where you recut and thread slightly oversize to true up the receiver. Once this is done you can't put yours or any other factory barrel back on unless you cutoff old tenon and rethread to the new size.

Re: Action true up

If you want to keep original dimensions you need to single point via internal threading with a lathe. I've trued my actions via this method so factory barrels can go back on if wanted without cutting the tenon completely off.

The Manson kit does make a much more simpler way of truing Rem 700 actions especially if you have hundreds to do and it does a good job.
