Gunsmithing Additional work on Rifle Basix trigger for Win M70

I recently purchased a Rifle Basix trigger for one of my Winchester Model 70's, according to the specs it can be as light as 10 ounces. However, as I get the weight down, I run into problems of the sear releasing the firing pin when the bolt is closed. I've had the same issues with a factory M70 trigger and thought I could avoid this by going to an aftermarket trigger. This is on a varmint rifle and I'd like to get the trigger down to 1 lbs. or so.

Have any of you guys had this issue and if so, how did you correct it?

Thanks!!

I put one in my Savage .17 and there simply was no way to prevent this other than not running it so light. Might be different on a Win 70, but I doubt you really have any other options.

I've installed lots of Rifle Basix triggers and the only time I run into that problem is when the trigger's weight of pull is set very close to the bottom limit or below. i.e. , if the triggers range is 1.5# to 3.5# the closer you adjust it to 1.5# the more inconsistent it gets but most time I can adjust it reliably down to 1.0 #.

You can also readjust the sear engagement but unless you are very experiened with triggers I recommend you don't try it. Spend a few dollars and have a gunsmith set it up for you.

Hope this helps.

Re: Additional work on Rifle Basix trigger for Win M70

Thanks shooter53. I'm not getting anywhere near the 10 oz mark, more like 2 lbs., which is why I'm surprised I'm having these issues. I don't mind working on triggers and have worked on many, but I just don't trust myself when it comes to changing sear angles, etc; like you said, if I'm gonna go that far I'd prefer having a 'smith do the work.

Maybe I was expecting a bit much from the Rifle Basix trigger, I've used a Jard in another M70 and it is great, but I'd heard god things about RB triggers so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Re: Additional work on Rifle Basix trigger for Win M70

emmagee,

On the Rifle Basix trigger you actually don't do anything to the sear angles you only adjust the amount of sear engagement ( how far the trigger falls under the sear block). It does not require stoning or anything like that. I guees the next question is what model Rifle Basix do you have and what is the rated range for weight of pull?

If you need the procedure we use to adjust the triggers, PM me.

Good luck.

Thanks, Howard.

I have the instructions, but appreciate the offer. The specs on the trigger I have show an adjustment range of 10 ounces to 4 lbs; like I said, I'm not anywhere close to 10 ounces with mine. Guess I may need to work with it a bit more.
