Gunsmithing Adjustable Cheeck Piece?

Re: Adjustable Cheeck Piece?

Might want to give Williams Gun Sight Company in Davison, MI a call. Fairly local and I hear they do good work. Check out their website, they seem to do it all. At least you'll get a starting point idea. Can't hurt.

I believe strongly in having McMillan do any work on a McMillan stock. They pillar bedded my A3 and it is a work of art.

If you're going for a precise cheekweld, and it doesn't need to be adjustable, consider a stock pack. They can be adjusted with 2mm, 3mm, and 6mm thick layers of Foamies Neoprene foam on their underside.

I firmly agree with most of the above. BUT, (always a but) while Karsten makes a fine product I have one issue with adjustable stuff. Is it a multi user platform? Do you plan on changing configurations a lot? By default of my husbands tastes we prefer the ergo's of the HS Precision style stocks, and the first thing he showed me was how much it sucks to be pushing your bag back then have the muzzle jump up as you hit the void for the adjustable butt. Our rifles are set up for us as individuals and as such why would we need adjustable cheekpieces and LOP? I know that we've had customers who insist on adjustable stuff just because its the tactical thing to do, but I just don't think knobs and adjustment rings are sexy. Stock pads/packs are for more utilitarian and functional.

Sorry, just my two cents.

Kenda,
I think like you and your husband which is why I originally put mouse pad strips under a stock pack. It looked like this:

Every time I wanted to remove my bolt (which included everytime I wanted to eject a loaded round as the COAL will not come out of the port without the bolt being moved WAY back) or clean the rifle, the stock pack had to come off and then back on. It got to be a pain in the hiney. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure the velcro straps bouncing over my sock during recoil (300WM) were giving me inconsistent POI .

Then a guy here on the Hide discovered that the adj. cheekrest from XLR Ind. fit well on Manners and McMillan stocks. Looks like this:

Adjustable? Yes. But more importantly it allows me to remove my bolt and clean without it being removed (and me saying really bad words) and gives me a much firmer cheekweld. More complicated than I would have liked, but utilitarian is not always utilitarian.

Re: Adjustable Cheeck Piece?

I've thought about the cheek pads, but I'm thinking I'm going to need some decent height, and with just foam pads it might be a little too wobbly.

I'm re-considering doing any adjustments to the A5 for the time being. I might end up selling what I have and ordering a new one with everything installed how I want it. It wouldn't hurt to get a longer LOP for it while I'm at it.

I just can't believe that I'm the only person out there who is having this problem. With the stock layout of the A5, and a 30mm scope mounted in LOW mounts on a pictanny rail, it's just way too high. Yet when I shoot trap, my line of sight is way ABOVE the vent rib of my shotguns.

Re: Adjustable Cheeck Piece?

I had that problem with my A5, a 1" tube, 40MM Objective, mounted on a Ken Karrel 20MOA base and Burris Signature 'Zee' rings.

The problem was the height of the Farrel base. I removed the base and replaced it with a pair of Leopold 2-piece bases, bedded to place the 100yd zero about 5MOA up from the absolute bottom elevation adjustment. Bear in mind, bedding 2-piece bases without torquing the tube is a complex task, not the same as with a single piece base, but it is possible if you use your head.

The resulting cheekweld provided proper optical axis alignment with the A5 adjustable cheekpiece lowered completely, which made it unnecessary.
