Adjusting bipod

My bipod mounts on a rail under the foreend that permits the bipod to be positioned at the front of the foreend, at the rear of the foreend, and at any point in between. My question is "where is the optimal location for stability and recoil management?" It would appear that positioning the bipod in a forward position would provide greater stability and a steadier shooting position. Is this correct?
