I have used one in an M16 and it did reduce the cyclic rate by about 20%. It's drawbacks are that it is sometimes difficult to get out of the buffer tube as it has a normal buffer face and then a piston that gets hung up on the buffer retainer. AAC provides a ring to make disassembly easy, but that is just something else to loose.
In a semi auto I don't see any benefit of using one, just get a heavy buffer and ensure that it works with the loads you are shooting.

Most rifle have a pretty good cyclic reducer already its called a disconector but if you are like Tim and have a fun switch he is right they do work but can be a pain.

I really don't think of heavy buffers as for full auto only.
There are benefits to using a heavy buffer in a semi auto which is overgassed.
It is all about bolt velocity. You want it controlled so that the rifle does not get beat up.

In case you are not aware, there are two basic models of the AAC rate reducers. The OLD ones have tungsten weights and the newer ones have steel weights. I have an old tungsten unit and I really like it in the right application.
