What would the advantage be of one over the other for a target use .223 AI? Probably an 18-20" barrel. Weight is not an issue...

I'd like to be able to shoot maybe up to 80gr bullets..

I'm going through lots of options of ideas for a .223 and just sifting through possibilities.

The thicker barrel will be stiffer and heavier.

If you are not worried about weight, then there aren't a lot of drawbacks to it.

I prefer not to go that heavy just because I still hold my rifles and more weight reduces the amount of time you can hold it before you start to shake.

if you are just using the gun for shooting targets

why wouldnt you build a longer barreled rifle and really sling those 80g bullets down range and reap the benefits of the extra velocity

i would look at the 90g bullets too

It's funny how it seems that on the internet most don't seem all that against a straight tapered bull barrel.I mean personally I like them for the look and rigidity, but when I talk to gunsmiths about their preference on a barrel contour for accuracy, they most of the time have the same answer,"thats up to the customer, but no one really cares how "bull" a barrel is if it isn't bored true and straight, and that's what an accurate barrel is all about".IMHO most gunsmiths when you ask them to install a 1.25" straight contour barrel blank and cut it to length, crown it,etc.,they seem to give you this crazy look first and then say they can do it,(i've had this done three times by three different gunsmiths),lol. If you can handle it,Go bull.

Um, based on the title, are you under the impression that you cannot buy a barrel with 5R rifling in this type of taper?

You CAN get a 1.25" horrendously over-engineered barrel AND also get 5R rifling in the barrel.

Whether a 1.25" straight taper ("bull") barrel is the right choice for your use would be up to you and your use. I would just ask myself "why am I getting that? what will it do for me? Do i need it?"

Re: Advantage of 1.25 full bull barrel over 5r barrel?

if you are handloading for this weapon you can shoot a barrel that is ALOT thinner say a light palma conture and it will be just as accurate as a barrel that is 2" OD.

Now the thinner barrel will heat up faster so the accuracy of a longer shot strings may fade but for the first 3-4 rounds a thin barrel can be made to shoot as accurate as a heavy barrel.

Stiffness plays a role because of vibration and harmonics , their are other ways around that other than a truck axle barrel

Can you compare its shooting ability/accuracy to lets say a contour of a Crusader?
