Hi All and Merry Christmas. This is my first post and kinda long. Getting back into shooting and was seeking some ideas. I'm interested in a .22LR or .17 to shoot off the bench at 100+ yards. I just got a Mueller 8.5x32x44 Target scope. I'm looking at the CZ Varmit, CZ 455 which allows changing LR and .17 barrels for only the cost of $130 for the additional barrel. Just takes a couple of minutes to swap out the barrels. Also the Savage TR or TRR looks good. Savagegunsmithing has a great deal where he will purchase the rife you pick out at his dealers cost, you pay $200 for this total accuracy package plus shipping for the dealer to him and from him to you. With the CZ I would spend $20 for a Yodave trigger kit and $8 for striker spring. The CZ barrel combo for LR and .17 is only $500. I suspect the TR/TRR worked on by Savagegunsmithing and the CZ Varmit will be in the same price range. From what I understand the fit and finish of the CZ is better. The CZ group at rimfirecentral seem to be very satisfied with the CZ. The CZ Varmit would ride the bench better. With the CZ Varmit or the TRR/TR I would have to choose one caliber. I suspect the hightly accuraced Savage would be a real tack driver. The .17 obviously better for the 200 yard shots but a lot more expensive to shoot. I do have two other .22lr I can shoot-Winchester 9422 XTR and a really old faling block single shot double set triggers bull barrel and redfied peeps. This is the type of target rifles used from the l890s to the 1930s. Great 50 yard rifle. Not looking to create any "war" of CZ vs Savage after all it is Christmas!
Thanks

Re: Advice for new rifle

I had a CZ vs Savage battle. CZ lost, out of MY hands. Went with Savage and never looked back.

It will come down to personal preference. CZs are great so you won't be disapointed.

If a benchrest is your only application, why go with .17hmr?
.22lr will get you out to 200 yards with Match ammo and on a good day...but that's just me.

Re: Advice for new rifle

I just traded for a clark custom with another hide member and it is the best shooting 22lr i have ever had. My son who is 13 fired about a half inch group at 50yds. All but three of the ten shots were one ragged hole.

Re: Advice for new rifle

Pick either the CZ or a Savage, both shoot good.

I wouldn't send anything away until you shoot it first. You may be surprised at just how accurate these rifles are out of the box. I don't know your ability, but my TR (22lr) shoots great and I have no urge to send it anywhere to have something that isn't broke fixed. I believe either of these rifles will hold 1MOA and less, out to 150yards or beyond.

I would pick one that feels right, test some ammo, and then buy a bunch when you find one the gun likes.

Re: Advice for new rifle

I have a cz I believe it is a 453 (set trigger) and i dont think it shoots that great and I would sell it if anyone is interested. I also had a Ruger 10/22 target model and it did not shoot that great so it is at volquartsen getting worked over now and i hope it will shoot with the clark.
