I looking for something in the $800 to $1000 range tops. I need a scope that can be taken into the woods and used on the range. Most range work will be done inside 500 yards but I do plan on shooting out to 1K occasionally. It will see a lot of use in the woods. I hunt cut overs here in the SE. Lots of careful glassing is required. I have a good set of Russian binos and I'm not dead set against more binos if they would serve me better.

I'd love to have a Vortex Razor but it's out of my price range. Are the Kowa scopes tough enough? USO spotter? I'm pretty well open to suggestions.

Thanks,

Paul

Kowa's in my experience have been the norm for service rifle, they are strong and take a good beaten, that's what i'd go with in my awsome opinion

Re: Advice needed on multiuse spotting scope.

I have the Nikon Field scope in 25-75x82. This is really a sweet scope for me. I can see 22lr bullet holes at 25 power which is the lowest setting at 200 yds which is as far as my range goes. It maintains its brightness and clarity throughout all of 75 power. The only drawback that one may find is eye relief is small.

How about the Pentax PF66ED spotter? It is one of the most compact and lightest of all the ED type spotting scopes.

Image quality not quite to the alpha class but it sits right below them. It is also pretty inexpensive, like in the $400 range and can even accept astronomical eyepieces.

Thanks for the input fellas. I found a deal on a Kowa 603 with a 20-60 eyepiece. Prominar ED glass, angled body right in the middle of my price range. I can't wait to try it out.
