Anyone have advice on a good all round throat for a 300 weatherby? PT&G has reamer with a .248 and a .188. Dave feels that a .188 is to short for factory. I think the .248 is too long for all but the heavest bullets. I would like something that would work well for handloads and factory. Any advice would be appreciated.

weatherby chambers are goofy they run super long throats so they can run such high pressures. i have a .300 with a .248 throat and it shoots 180-200gr. just fine

you are talking about a 62k psi round, longer is better for the higher pressure... I think mine is a bit longer than .248 even, maybe .260ish

Does the long throat extend the pressure pulse before the bullet engages resistance? Just curious why the long throat.

less initial pressure due to the length that you can seat the projectile... less initial pressure means less overall pressure, I think....

If there is any chance you may sell or loan out this rifle for safety sake always run Sammi on the throat. A local world famous smith here in my part of the country fitted a 257Wby with a short throat and it came apart in spectacular fashion half way through a box of factory ammo. Lucky the owner of the rifle wore glasses. About the only thing salvaged was the swivel studs. I shoot a lot of Weatherby's and they work just as well with super short bullets as they do the long ones. The 75 grain bullets in my 257 travel about .450" before engaging the rifling and it truley is a 1/4 minute rifle. The bullet is supported all the way to the rifling. It's not like they really jump a gap unsupported.
