Probably going to get flammed for asking but here goes. My daughter is shooting a palma rifle this summer and I have to drive her, so I want to shoot in the 600yd matches. I have a 20 inch 300wm that shoots real good but has a brake. I have a LA 700 with .532 bolt face that I want to rebarrel but was wondering if anyone has experience with a 20 inch 7mm rem mag. I thought this might make a good hunting/600 yd match gun without the recoil of the 300wm.

Re: Advice on barrel length

If your flame thrower shoots well then why worry about it. Personally I don't see the point of a short barreled magnum but that is just me. If I'm shooting a magnum I looking to take full advantage of the case capacity. With that being said that is nothing wrong with using what you have in a match.

Re: Advice on barrel length

I am getting soft in my old age, that 300wm is not comfortable to shoot 120rds in 2 days without the brake. I was hoping the 7mm would have less recoil and still make 600yds with moderate loads.

Re: Advice on barrel length

Umm, why a magnum for just 600yd matches?

I think if a friend told me he was building a 20" 7mm Mag and wasn't doing it to hunt grizzlies or elk or such in thick vegetation I'd slap him....

Re: Advice on barrel length

I guess that answers my question if the 7mm is not much different then the 300wm, I will have them install a 300wm barrel and live with recoil during the shoots. This rifle is in a heavier stock, and will have a heavier barrel so hopefully that will help. I understand that trying to have a rifle for two different things is not going to be the best solution.

I should have mentioned hunting more then I did. I hunt in thick cover/and fields in tree stands for deer, and black bear. I am just trying to have 1 rifle put together for both things. Kids Palma rifle does not come cheap.

I was wanting something in a heavier barrel then I own for those shoots.
