I have a DD MK12 headed my way. My first AR. I am 65 and recently retired and look forward to going to the range early morning during the week, having a cup of coffee and shooting. My range is limited to 100 yards. What I would like to accomplish is squeezing sub moa from this rifle. Also I will use it occasionally for local deer hunting. While hunting I will be in a shooting house over a green field with a max shot of 100 yds. Their will be low light morning and afternoon hunting. My son also has a 556 and I can see us getting into competition with each other on the 100 yd range. I wear glasses these days and don’t seem to have a problem with a scope.
At first I was thinking of a SHV 3-10. I did not like the fact of non-illumination and 2nd focal plane. I spoke to someone and they mentioned the SHV 4-14 f1. I like this scope, but damn it is almost 15” long! Do guys use scopes this long on mk12s?

My question is will I need a 14 power to shoot precision or will the 10 power suffice? I don’t really have a budget, but I think somewhere around the $1000-1200 mark is where I will settle. Thanks in advance.

Depends on your eyes really, for me 10x is fine (24 years old).

Getting sub-moa accuracy from your rifle will be much much more dependent on your shooting form and skill than your magnification power. Using proper trigger control and follow through will be of greater benefit than a higher magnification optic.

Basically, if you can see it, you can hit the target at 100 yards, assuming your fundamentals are solid.

Given your price point and overall use, I’d recommend looking at the PX here for a used Bushnell LHRS, Bushnell DMR, Burris XTR, Vortex Gen 1 Razor, Vortex PST Gen 2, NF SHV F1, SWFA 3-9, 3-15, 10x HD, Athlon Ares, or a host of other excellent at that price point.

Good luck with the rifle and have a great time!

At that distance and price point look at model Z3 4 x 12 Swarovski. They are on sale now at eurooptic for sub 1k. I use this optic on my Larue 556. Great scope for less than a grand. Keep it simple and enjoy the next chapter of your life. This site is ripe with very knowledgeable shooters. I have learned a ton about rifle shooting from here.

Thanks for the advice guys. I agree with your assessment of this site. I have been a lurker for awhile and just decided to jump in. I’m out of the rat race and looking forward to
simpler things for sure.
