Im looking for some of you long time AR guys to give me some suggestions or advise about some of the better companies out there manufacturing AR parts for upper recievers. I am in the process of building my first Ar. Basically what Im looking for is the names of companies that you have been happy with there equipment. My lower is done, ( C3 lower, dpms stock and parts kit) Now Im looking for some good upper recievers and barrels. 16" barrel and either a A2, or A4 reciever. I have been told by friends to go with C3, JD, or Yankee Hill on the reciever, and Stag on the barrel. Thanks.

I should also say, that I live in California :-( I had to modify the lower to comply with this states stupid laws. Are there uppers that are not legal? I thought it was just the lowers tht I had to change, but I might be wrong.

Hell, I was gonna give you some advice, but I live in a free state, and don't know what you have to abide by.

That said, you can't go wrong with Colt, Bravo Company (BCM), or Daniels Defense. Chances are that I'm wrong, but I thought that I'd heard something about Noveske, perhaps LMT, making a Cali legal firearm. You'll have to google it; I'm too drunk after 5 mids shifts and no beer.

Yeah not real cali friendly around here. Go to Calguns.net and do a search or just look around the forum here a little bit...maybe 15 minutes? and I am sure you will find plenty of opinions for starter-match grade AR's.

Q) What is the application of this rifle going to be?

If you want a handy and accurate upper that is good to go for predator hunting, 3 gun or precison shooting I would recommend Specialized Dynamics. Scott builds a helluva AR/upper.

If its for looking like a wannabe doorkicker and blasting then get whatever looks cool, they'll all pretty much do...

I'd imagine you are looking for the former, since you are posting here.

I would not choose a Stag when so many other top-quality options are readily available, like Noveske and BCM. Definitely do the flattop as carry handles are dinosaurs.

RRA makes very good uppers for around 700-800 and i think they are Cali legal. If your in a bind for money you could get a lower class Doublestar but i wouldn't really recommend their rifles to anyone. They aren't that accurate and mine jams. Colt still a good choice but Bushmater is still one of the larger contributors to the market demand and more than likely Cali legal.

If MD Laws get any more stricter I would end up leavin and going to PA.
