AI 10rd mags WILL work in a Sako TRG!

This was being discussed in another thread and someone asked if other mags would work to which myself and several other people replied it would not seeing as how that's what appears to be the general consensus here and everywhere else. This was challenged with a thread (here) from the end of 2007 with 'proof' of otherwise so this isn't new information. It does, however, appear to be widely unknown information so I thought I would post it in a new thread for discussion.

I grabbed a couple AI mags and tried them both. First I tried a Morta ten round and while it snapped into place it was VERY difficult to remove even pushing the magazine release. I didn't even attempt to load live ammunition into it to check how it fed since to me this was already enough of an issue that I wouldn't even attempt to use one.

Next up was a stock AI magazine of the 10rd 1.5 stack variety which surprisingly snapped right into place w/o any effort at all unlike the Morta magazine. I noticed that was some side to side play and this might drive some (myself included) a little crazy if you like things to be solid and tight in a precision rifle. I pressed the magazine release and the AI mag dropped right out. Intrigued by this I decided to load it up full with 10rds of factory (175gr) ammo to see how it fed and cycled. To my surprise it cycled with the same amount of effort in the bolt handle as the OEM Sako magazine all the way until empty. I took an awful video with my Droid which I won't even post since it was hard to do all of the above one handed so the video isn't even worth posting but for the doubters I assure you that it's possible with the OEM AI mags. Again, it's clear that these weren't intended for the rifle as the fit isn't snug but I pulled hard as I could w/o ammo and the mag didn't even act like it was going to pull out w/o disengaging the magazine catch. Once that was pressed though it comes right out unlike the Morta mag.

I wanted to start a dedicated thread for this topic for discussion purpose and to get other people's feedback on what mags may or may not work. I know the big knock on the TRG has been the cost of accessories but between the great bipods out there (Atlas for instance) and now this it seems the TRG is just that much better of an option.

Feel free to discuss.

That I don't know but I happen to have a TRG-42 as well so I'll check it out and report back unless someone beats me to it.

Gents,
We have been testing AICS mags in TRG-22's for awhile now. Later this summer we will be releasing a conversion kit with the parts you need, along with some enhancements. Some of the guys here on the hide are running these kits as we speak (testing).

If you run a loose magwell you can sort of get it to work with the factory TRG mag catch, but you still have the difficulty in feeding the rounds. With a tighter magwell, or Morta mags, you cannot get the mags out, because AICS mags have a protruding catch, while TRG mags have a hole.

Anyways, this is doable. We'll be posting some info about the kit on our website here in the next couple weeks.

Thanks,
Justin

Is this what you have been hinting at LowLight? Or is there more to this story??

I told David I can't go Saturday because we have some friends in from out of town but if you two are able to go Sunday instead I'm in. I'll reply to the email.

Re: AI 10rd mags WILL work in a Sako TRG!

Aside from lower cost is there any advantage to running AICS mags over the Sako mags? I suppose it would allow those with TRGs and AICS setups to use only one mag in both.

I like the adapter kit idea but if the cost very high it will negate the cost savings for the cheaper AICS mags.

I to, have ran my AICS mags in the TRG, but they rattle like heck. What I dont see is why there are no aftermarket mags like the AICS's? Some are actualy an improvement in oal. With the single stack mag in the TRG it is not nearly as efficient as the double stacked versions.

I have been whining to JBWIII to make a Morta Mag for the TRG but I think he is attempting to recoup some of his investment with the AI mags at the moment.
