You are going to want to use the 45 moa base or you will have to machine the 18 moa as the 5-25 will not fit in it, or the 28moa without some machine work.

The interference is irrespective of the rifle. It is a 5-25/AI Scope mount issue.

I think he may be worried about the flat top issue. I'm told the 45moa mount works with the 4-16x56 Henny on the AX, I assume the S&B would clear too.

Re: AI 338 lapua qestion

The 45moa mount is optimal for the S&B 5-25 and works with a monolithic rail as found on the AX but you won't be able to use a sunshade and butler creeks (I believe it's one or the other but not both but I'd have to pull the scope off my rifle and drop it on another to check and I'm not really in the mood for that).

Fastford
If your SB 5-25 is a Mil scope you use the 45 moa as the total elevation on that scope is 93 MOA.
But if you have a moa scope you gotta use less, 20 for sure, and maybe but just maybe will 30 work.
The Moa 5-25 only have 56 moa of total elevation.

Generally speaking all PMll scopes with mil and single turn are made for 20-25 moa.
All PMll with double turn and mil are made for 45 moa.

Sako TRG-42>Sako 3 Ring 34mm 30 MOA mount>SB 5-25x56.

Goodness.

Re: AI 338 lapua qestion

Got the 45 MOA on my AIAWSM 338 LM with the S&B 5-25x56. Clears it just fine. Don't know about the AX model. In fact, the 45 MOA is for the 338LM use. It only took me 3 rounds to zero mine.

Re: AI 338 lapua qestion

I was using a 45 moa on my AX (.308) and I had no problem getting a 100 yard zero. The front butler creek cap required minor modifications to clear the rail, but it worked.

If you are talking a Spuhr mount, then the mount is just a bit higher and you won't have clearance issues.

The only other thing is this- with a 5-25x56, you will see shadowing in the upper portion of the tube from the erector being so close to "bottoming out" in the elevation travel. You probably won't be shooting your .338 much at 100 yards, but on my .308 it was driving me nuts and I didn't need the extra ~7 mils of travel, so I went with the 20.6 moa mount.

PM me if you have further questions. I know that a 100 yard zero isn't guaranteed with a 45moa mount, but it is recommended from AI, and the only mount that will fit the scope without machining. From what I am told, the 45 moa AI mount was made specifically for the 5-25x56 to be able to maximize the travel.

Hell, if you want to go with an AI mount this time around, I do happen to have a 45 moa pic rail mount that I was using on MY AX with my 5-25, if you are interested.

Re: AI 338 lapua qestion

Good choice on the sphur mount. I'm getting ready to order a few more for my rifles. The AI mount is nice but no where near the quality as the sphur. I own them both and am swapping out my mounts slowly for the sphur.
