I have a relativly new AI AE 308 that is having accuracy issues. Im shooting Federal 168 match and had the barrel cut and re-crowned to 22 inchs from a very reputable gunsmith. I have good glass and the rig just wont shoot as good as it should. My shooting partner has the exact same rig, bought at the same time and his is doing the same thing. Any suggestions? Im not even sure what twist the barrel is. Maybe a heavier bullet?

Re: AI AE acting up

Have you tried different ammo since the cutdown? Your rifle in the current length may not like that ammo any more. You should try different ammo and load configurations. I had a 223 recrowned and the ammo I was shooting stopped. I had to start over to get it to shoot again. It did shoot better after the work but not with the same ammo.

Re: AI AE acting up

It could be a crown issue, have it rechecked. Also how is your scope mounted?Rings,or Ai pic mount? Ai rifles need proper height rings, unlike Rem 700s that can have scopes mounted as low as possible. If you dont have the scope set up correctly and your length of pull ,youll never shoot the Ai or aics stocked rifle accurately.Post a pic of your set up,maybe we can help out better.

Re: AI AE acting up

unfortunatly i never shot the rig before the work was done. My partner and i both bought the rifles new and dropped them off at the gunsmith. I havent tried differant ammoe or weights yet but i figured the 168grn would run like a champ thru a 1/12 twist barrel. I have an AI scope base and a US optics base with Badger rings.

Re: AI AE acting up

Please do not take this the wrong way.

How familiar are you with the platform? AI's are a different animal. If you are not comfortable with the thumbhole stock, two stage trigger ect... This may be playing into how the rifle shoots. It may just be operator error and your shooting may get better as you get used to the system.

I have yet to see a AI that does not shoot. Most of the time it is related to the "nut" behind the trigger.

Again, please do not take this the wrong way.

Re: AI AE acting up

Take it to the range a few more times first. Like was said earlier check your mounts, rings, etc. I was having the exact same issue for the first 2-3 range trips when I first got my AE. However, the bottom line was I was not used to the rifle, the trigger or anything else. (Was used to my remmy's)

After a few more range sessions, the rifle "magically" started shooting lights out. Honestly there was nothing wrong with the rifle the whole time, it was all driver error on my part. I just was not comfortable on it yet. Give yourself a few more rounds down range. I don't doubt you can shoot at all, just send a few more down the tube first.

edit: smoked by Edgewater lol

Re: AI AE acting up

this is my first AI. All my bolt action rigs are with two stage triggers. The thumb hole stock is a first. I guess i can keep chipping away and see what happens. Thanks for the info guys...much appreciated

Re: AI AE acting up

Definitely get some more range time on it first. Mine shot 168's OK... but when I started loading with 178 AMAX's it was a totally different animal. I never shot anything else in it afterwards. You should probably try some different bullets before doing anything drastic, perhaps some FGMM 175's...

Re: AI AE acting up

Do you still have the original ai scope base?
I would try swapping that back in because when I asked AI 2 years ago they specifically told me not to use the USO base due to problems they've had.
