I have the opportunity to buy one second hand in excellent condition for $5500.

Is this good value?

Can such a large caliber be shot without difficulty in offhand, kneeling and sitting?

Re: AI AW 338 lap mag

It won't be the caliber that will kick your ass in those shooting positions, it's the weight of the rifle. Proper use of a sling will help, but I have to ask... Why would you want an ELR caliber for position shooting? For something that is essentially chambered in $5 bills, that seems like a bit of a waste.

But yes, that's a good value if the round count isn't too up there and has a couple accessories like a couple mags and the bipod.

Re: AI AW 338 lap mag

Thanks Redmanss

The AI barrel is unused as he has been using a custom made barrel.

It has fired less than 200 rounds.

I want a good precision rifle for competition and hunting so I need to be able to shoot it in a number of positions. I was intending to buy a sako trg 300 win mag for this purpose.

Re: AI AW 338 lap mag

I think it's a great deal even if its a factory configuration and accessories. For a new AW barrel it is a great price. If it has a 2.0 stock, case and extra mag I think it's a steal.

Re: AI AW 338 lap mag

Depending on the barrel length, you're looking at a 17-20 lbs rifle, so decide yourself if that is what you want to be doing position shooting with. I can be done, yes, but not the most ideal. Also take a look at the need for the performance of a 338LM versus a .260 or .243. Hunting very big game at long distances is one thing, but taking anything in the lower 48 out to 800yds is realistic with a much smaller and more practical round.

Recoil is easy enough to control with the proper muzzle devices, so I wouldn't concern myself too much there.

I understand you have a deal opportunity in front of you, but if you aren't going to be playing the ELR game, I would seriously consider if it is too much gun for what your intended purposes are.

Thanks for the replies

I intend on doing ELR shooting, but also want something which I will be able to do positional shooting with.

My original intention was the Sako TRG 300 win mag (5.3kg) which is lighter than the AW 308 (6.1kg) and the AW 300 win mag (6.5kg) as well as the AW 338 lap mag (6.9kg). However I keep hearing how great AI is so I am no longer sure.
