Long overdue range report on my AIAE MK2.

At least for now I’ll spare the rifle pics as it looks like any other 20” green AE 1.5 with a PR in badger rings. I did swap out the factory flat base for a 20 MOA USO base.

It took me a while to get the components to work up a load as well as I had to get a chrono but I think I have everything dialed in. I used the G7 BC in FTE to get my drop chart and so far it seems to be on the money.

The load ended up being LC brass, SMK 175 BTHP, 45 gr var with an ogive of 2.1355 and I used BR2 primers. 2681 FPS was the average of 20 rounds fired in 2 5 round strings and one 10 round string.

I received the rifle on a trade with 160 rounds on it. When I started this session the round count was at 360 and I have yet to clean it beyond pulling a bore snake with some CLP through it.

I’m not one big on posting group pics but I’m so pleased with this rifle I thought it necessary especially since AI rifles come up so often as a topic here. Bottom line is these things shoot. The following groups are not fantastic but I’m rather pleased with them considering the rifle hasn’t been cleaned and the ammo was cranked out in a 500 round batch on a progressive reloader.

BTW not sre I'm measuring the groups correctly just measuring center to center on the hols furthest apart with a caliper.

All shots fired from prone off a bipod with rear Triad bean bag at 200 yards.

This was pure luck IMO. Smallest aiming point used (1" SNC) that I obviously did not hit lol.

To me this was the string that mattered most as it was fired with a time limit of 1 min for 10 rounds.

Now that I have the rig dialed in I'm excited to try the dot drill at 200,300,500 and 600 yds.

Given the dates on the targets, I'd say it was today

Re: AIAE MK 2 range report.

Yeah I got a hair up my butt at 830am so I was at the 200yd line on the HP range all by me self sending rounds by 915. Wasnt planned but I have not shot since before Christmas and I go back to work tomorrow so it was an itch that needed scratching.

I need to get better at coordinating with others

but I never plan to do shit it just happens. Been bringing my girl to the .22 indoor range during the week in the evenings and she is really digging it so I cant complain.

How far away from CRPPC are you? I'm just up the road from 4 corners so it takes me less than 10 min to get there.

Anchor, No worries... I'm the same way... usually more because I'd rather shoot than talk

I'm about 40-50 minutes out... Rolled in at 9:01 today... I'll run into ya' down there one of these days... I run almost that identical load.... 175SMK, 44.7 vgt, 2.13, BR2... nice shooting!

Re: AIAE MK 2 range report.

I have trg22 with about 2000rds and a new AIAE mkII with about 200rds down the tube. I used to shoot a rem in a AICS 1.0 and liked but was never happy with the rem. part of it so I looked at building a another custom rifle but found a new TRG22 for a good price (less then buying the parts for a build). So I have been competing with the TRG during the 09'year and shot very well with the rifle. But I have had problems with the mag feed and just the plain cost of accessories, so I had been looking at the the AE. Christmas came and under the tree was a AE mkII with the 1.5 stock. Thats the background. Points of difference that I have noticed between the two:
Stock: I liked the 1.0 the adj cheek of the 1.5 doesn't fit me well at all. The trg stock adj's in so many ways that is fits perfect.

Trigger: Trg very good, the AE trigger is not so much

Feeding and extraction: AE feeds and ejects rounds so good it is unreal. The Trg is not as positive but the bolt runs smoother then the AE but may just need more brake-in time.

Accuracy: The Trg shoots the 155 and 185 lapua very well I can get groups in the 1/2 moa range with better groups when I work at it. The AE has been a little challenging so far 5/8 moa to 1 moa for most loads. The 185 load that I use in the Trg looks like it may work but I am not sure about it in the 1-12 twist at lower altitude(Im at 5000'). So I dont have good data for the AE.

Safeties: Both have problems. I dont like sticking my finger in the trigger guard to use it on the Trg. AE is hard to get to but you can have the safety on and work the bolt which is a big plus.

So with time I have spent with both rifles I dont think I would give up on the TRG for the AE Mk II just yet. If I can make a cheek piece that is more like the 1.0, find the load it likes and get use to trigger I may have to change my option.

Hope this helps

Re: AIAE MK 2 range report.

You've listed the same complaints I have with the TRG:

-Ejection sometimes sucks for no apparent reason.
-Safety in the trigger guard is not good IMO.
-Feeding issues, seemingly random.

Thanks for the info.
